When we move (and I have some time - probably until late summer depending on when we find a house) I want to re-do my son's bedroom. He loves trains and I'd like to make it train-themed.

His bed is a dark wood, traditional looking, so I thought it would be fun to make his room more of a vintage train station theme.

My ideas so far are to have a few "travel by train" posters on his wall (I've already ordered a New York one), I'd like to make a toy box look like an antique trunk (paint it to look like leather, leather handles on the sides, vintage destination stickers on it, etc), get a train station type clock (wrought iron holder with a double face), and turn a couple of cheap tin lanterns into lamps.

Does anyone else have any ideas? I'm a little afraid of it being too dark. Any ways besides the posters that I can brighten it up? What color would you paint the walls?

Oh, I thought it would be cute to make a ceiling fan look like a railroad crossing sign, but would that look strange with the vintage theme?

My nephew had a train room. They actually put a shelf up high all the way around his room (so high that it was over the door and window level) and put train tracks and a model train on it. It was pretty cool.

My son was a train fanatic when he was younger. My husband was more than happy to indulge the obsession and created the most amazing train bedroom. Lionel makes a great clock where an actual train sounds as a train travels around the clock. We had shelves and tracks and trains all around the room. A huge railroad crossing that sounded bells and lights in the corner. Train posters and pictures that we got after contacting the LIRR. Pennsylvania Dutch Country has many many train items in furniture, wood as well as themed bedroom lamps and such. That would be worthwhile to look into. Have fun!

Oh, what did you say when you contacted them? Any tips?

These links have old railroad as well as new railroad memorabilia. Some posters are as little as $3.00

A Google search will return many railroad pictures that you can print and frame.

LIRR - 718-558-7400 We called and asked if they had any photos or memorabilia and how we could go about picking it up. They gave us key chains, photos, poster, pencils. It was a very nice packet and folder. I would call your local railroad and ask the same. They have school tours that these items are used for.

Try and find bright colored train related bedding and accesories. I would look for peel and stick border with the train theme on it. Its way better than actual wall paper border.

Wall color- A light blue would bring contrast to the dark wood and make it pop. Maybe even a light blue/gray.

Have a great time deciding what to do. Check the JCpenney catalog too.

Good luck

The Land of Nod has a great lamp and clock. I think they even have twin bedding. With DS we did a Thomas theme, so we painted his room blue, put up a peel and stick border, bought a train poster that isn't Thomas, and bought a shelf hat looks like a train at a craft show. We need another poster, and a lamp.
