I posted this on Kathy's facebook post about it and I'm posting it here, too, so anyone reading will have a better chance of recognizing a problem they might not even know they're seeing. http://www.rd.com/advice/parenting/8-quiet-signs-of-someone-drowning/
in addition to this, people can drown when they are attempting to stay underwater for extended periods of time.
it can happen that they pass out before they resurface.
I knew a teen who wanted to be a navy seal, so he would practice swimming long distances underwater. When he was 17 years old, he passed out and was pulled from the bottom of the pool unconscious (it's not known how long he was down there before he was seen).
He remained in a coma or vegetative state for 10 years until he finally died.
To say it was tragic would of course be an understatement.
