Hiya

Well I am confused, my mum says I could buy some things for my bottom drawer in the states, I told her I didnt need any more nighties, she looked at me strange and pointed out I am meant to have things I plan on using in a house in it.

So did anybody else have a "bottom drawer" or is my mum mad lol

I just thought it wierd lol but may be a good idea

and if I do have one what should I buy

Hi
The bottom drawer idea is an old fashioned term now and comes from the days when we didn't live with our other halfs but moved into together after we had got married.
Normally it is things such as plates, cutlery, tea towels etc that go in it but this day and age I suppose anything for your house is really useful.

I've heard of it but I never had one. I think in this day and age as people tend to move out of home prior to marriage (whether that be with a partner or just with friends housesharing) they pick stuff up as they go along. Well, that's what I did!

Ive heard of it but its about as old fashioned as a woman having a dowry!!! I just bought stuff as I went along but if you are planning on moving out its not a bad idea to buy stuff now if you see a great special offer like half price cups etc.

My Mum's saving things like cutlery, crockery for DD'S (21) bottom drawer........

Not sure DD is impressed with the thought of having to sift through loads of 'uncool' stuff when she eventually gets to uni!

Given that she's spent the last 18 months living in the equivalent of a shed, with no electricity and running water (happy as Larry), in South America she can't quite get her head round what she'll do with so much stuff :rotfl2:

i had one !!!

when we were due to get married we brought a house but didn't live in it and i started buying stuff a few months beforehand.....non perishables like cleaning stuff towels dusters things like that

now ive written that down it seems really sad :guilty:

I've heard of it. Don't think it is as common as it once was.

Am I the only one who has heard of a *hope chest*?

My mother always wants to put dish towels, sheets, blankets, dishes, etc. in a hope chest for my daughters, as a matter of fact my sister in law gives each one of my daughters a place setting of Christmas China for their *hope chest* every year. My DDs do NOT have an actual hope chest, but my mother and all her sisters DID, a cedar lined chest.

M

I started a bottom drawer once I got engaged. I used to buy linen and towels mainly and a few kitchen utensils - old fashioned maybe but a good idea I think. But then I have been married nearly 28 years!

I've got a lovely cedar chest that's meant to be my hope chest. It was my grandmother's. The only "hopeful" thing I've got in there is a shoebox full of my great aunt's silverware. Mostly, it's full of old stuff and winter blankets! :)

my mom kept things for me as a "bottom drawer" when DH and I got engaged, it wasn't in a bottom drawer though......mostly stacked in my old room at their house!! :teeth: I think we had bed linen, cups, cutlery and all of the presents from our engagement party. I also bought quite a lot of things from the home shop in Downtown Disney, theres a bit of Disney in every room in our house! ::MickeyMo :wizard:
