I hope it helps a family with closure. A friend of mine helped solve a cold case. She had no relationship to the case. Anything is possible.

With today's DNA techniques, they might get leads to family members of criminals. I'm glad they're doing this.

It's not the same thing but it does involve crowdsourcing -- a YouTube bodycam channel I follow has launched a website using an AI mapping tool that people can sign up for and help look for missing persons. They just found a person they were looking for with this method; unfortunately the person was found deceased, but helps bring the family some closure. So I think this approach could help.

I feel like there should be a fund to get DNA done on all Jane Doe / John Doe cases and another fund to help families of missing persons gather relative's DNA for the purpose of matching. Better yet, if those who run these commercial DNA businesses would donate resources to law enforcement for some nice tax breaks as a charitable arm... wishful thinking though
