Borrowing Question

I am new to DVC in 2003; and I called today to borrow from my March,2006 points to go in December of 2005. The woman who made the reservation was sort of difficult to understand, and she made some comment about "when you borrow points and then don't use them (alluding to if we change our minds and don't go), then I thought she said we would lose them? Did she mean that we couldn't bank them, but would we still have until Feb., 2006 to use them? I hope that we wouldn't actually forfeit them.

Thanks for any insight you experts give!

I'm sure she meant that you just couldn't bank them or return them to their original year. If you cancel a reservation that uses borrowed points, you have until the end of the use year they were borrowed into to use them.

Hopefully that's what she meant, because that's the way it is. If you borrow - and that transaction happens when you make the reservation, not when you arrive - you can't un-borrow. So if something happened with your December plans, you would still have until the end of Feb 2006 to use the points. Bear in mind, however, that you could be severely restricted if you cancel less than 31 days out, and you will also have some restrictions on the points the last two months of your use year.

Since the OP asked this, I started wondering about my fall plans. I have BCV booked but called MS to try and get BWV for the same time. They asked me if I would take any view that came up. Said that was no problem since I was already using the same points for a BCV that would equal a preferred view at BW. My question though...if I end up getting a standard view, which will be fewer pts., what will happen to those extra pts? I did borrow about 20 pts from 2006. But, in late Nov., just before my trip, I will be calling MS to book our Oct '06 trip. Will I be able to apply those left over borrowed pts to that trip? UY is June btw.

I'm not completely sure what you did, but it sounds like you borrowed June '06 points into '05. If that's the case, they expire May 30, 2006 and they cannot be "put back," banked, or used for the Oct '06 ressie.

It also sounds like you didn't actually get your second ressie for December, and I sent you a PM about that.

It's always easiest if you chart out what you are doing.

Taking the March Use Year.

Points received March 2005 can be used for trips through the last day of February.

Points received March 2006 can be used for trips from March 1, 2006-Feb. 28(?), 2007

You are taking a trip in December 2005 and needed additional points. You "borrowed" from the March 2006 allotment.

The March 2005 points used for the reservation must be used for the trip or will expire Feb. 28, 2006 -- unless you cancel 31 days or more before arrival and are within your banking deadlines. Then you will have the option of banking. If you cancel the December reservation 31 days or more from your arrival, you can still bank the points subject to your banking deadlines (100% August 31, 50% November 30, 25% December 31)

The March 2006 points you borrowed and used for the reservation are locked. If you cancel, they must be used no later than February 28, 2006.

If MS says something that you don't understand, don't be embarassed to say so. If it's a problem understanding the person you have on the line, you can hang up and call back and ask for a supervisor to explain it to you. It's important not to say yes to something you don't understand. You could be making a mistake with your points.

When you borrow points from following next years, they become points in the current year and must be used within the current year. Borrowed points cannot banked later or returned to their original year.

So, you would need to make sure that your plans for taking the trip are good or you do risk losing the borrowed points, if you cannot use them before they expire. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Thanks guys. After figuring it all out on paper, it's only 10 pts. that will be lost and even if I end up in a standard view vs. preferred view at BWV I won't care. I'll just pretend I'm using those 10 pts. for my terrific standard view.

Hrmm... so what if you have borrowed points, make a reservation and then "downgrade" your room or switch resorts where you would use less points. Can you pick and choose which points are actually used? For example: it would be 50 less points and you had borrowed 50 points. Can you use the 50 that you "borrowed" and then bank the other 50 that's part of your actual contract? (assuming you are within the banking times/percentages)

They may be able to sub borrowed points for other points that are current year and let you bank them.

Yes and no. You can not just swap out points but if ANY of the days are still available, you can cancel then rebook the rook with the same outcome. Then bank the points that are freed up pursuant to the banking rules.
