Booking scenario - would some of my points be in holding?

I'm a AKV owner (Kidani) with an Oct UY. I can only use my 2008 pts for stays beyond May 2009.

We're tentatively planning a trip for Nov 2009. As we're not planning any other trips for 2008, we'd have to bank our 2008 points. For the Nov 2009 trip I was planning on booking AKV at the 11-month mark for a Savannah view Sun-Fri stay (165 poitns) and then try to switch to a VWL or BCV at the 7-month mark hopefully.

If we get a stay at VWL or BCV for the same dates, the point total would be 160 points (as opposed to the 165 required to book AKV at the 11-month mark).

My question is: if the initial AKV reservation was made using banked points, but then we switch to a VWL or BCV reservation at the 7-month mark (which is less points), would the difference be considered holding points?

I know that 5 points isn't a lot to be concerned about, but just trying to figure out how the points would work when a reservation is switched.

Thanks in advance

Points become Holding Points when a resevation is cancelled 30 days or less to check-in date.

So at 7 month window if you change your reservation to VWL or BCV the extra points that you would not be utilizing from your first reservation made at 11 month window would not become Holding Points BUT those 5 'left over points' would need to be used by end of your 2009 Use Year
( September 30 2010) because if they were from your 2008 Use Year allotment which you banked into your October 2009 Use Year then they can't be banked again.

So the only "restrictions" on those 5 points would be that you can't bank them again and that you would need to utilize them by the end of the 2009 Use Year (September 30 2010). And you would not be able to transfer these 5 points to another DVC member because they are banked points (only points from current Use Year may be transferred to another member; not points that have been banked from previous Use Year or borrowed from upcoming Use Year).

Hope this helped :)

There is one scenario where you would end up with points in the holding account. If you can't get into VWL or BCV at 7 months out and go on the waiting list and the waitlist doesn't come through until you are within 30 days of check in, those 5 points would end up in the holding account. That is because when you "switch" resorts what MS is really doing is cancelling the first reservation and using the points to book the new reservation. In the last minute waitlist scenario, when the initial reservation is cancelled all of the points go into the holding account. In your situation, all but five of those holding points would be used for the new reservation, leaving you with five holding points. But again, that would happen only if the "switch" from AKV to VWL or BCV occurs within 30 days of check in.

Are all of the 165 points used for the originall reservation banked points? If not, and the switch occured more than 30 days before check in, I think that not only would the returned points not go into holding, but you could still bank those 5 points if the switch happened before your banking window closed.

For example if the original reservation used 150 banked points and 15 points from the UY of the reservation, I think the new reservation would use the 150 banked points plus 10 from the current UY, so the 5 returned points would be current UY points which not only would not go into holding, but could still be banked.

Hopefully, someone else can confirm this, or correct me if I am wrong.

It could have worked except, if I understand OP correctly, the Use Year is October and the points they want to use are from 2008 UY allotment that they want to use in NOV 2009.

So they will bank OCT 2008 UY points into NOV 2009 UY for this reservation because 2008 UY expires on Sept. 30 2009.

The banked points will not be able to be re-banked.

What you suggested could have worked if the trip was before
Sept 30 2009 because then they wouldn't need to bank 2008 UY points - they would have been able to keep & use those points in the current 2008 UY and would have had until May 31 2009 to bank leftover points that they didn't need to use for reservation.

But as you point out if some of the points from the first reservation do happen to be from 2009 UY allotment then you are correct that those points would still be 2009 UY allotment points if fewer points are needed when changing the reservation at 7 month window. MS would utilize the banked 2008 UY points first at the 7 month switch and just draw the amount necessary to complete the reservation from 2009 UY allotment.
