Booking Home Resort vs Other Resort?

I own at Bay Lake Tower, and we are planning on going to WDW next December, so I am going to book at BLT as soon as the 11 month window opens. If I decide at a later date (within the 7 month window), to stay at another resort, what is the process to switch the reservation?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

It is going to be hard to find another location at seven months out for December. You might get SSR or OKW or AKV, but even those might be tough to get.

December is part of the peak season for DVC bookings, so I would be online exactly when the home resort window opens at 11 months out to book BLT.

If you want to change at 7 months, again, I would be online first thing in the morning. Unless you are looking at one of the larger resorts as D&B says, I would expect to ride the wait list and hope for the best.

I prefer to call member services to make this type of change. Did this switching BLT to Poly for Oct 2016. Although online opened at 8am ET, I waited for MS to open at 9. I already saw what I wanted was open but was concerned that between the time I cancelled BLT and went to book Poly, Poly may have filled up and I would have nothing. Seems like MS has some special pixie dust to make this work with less time between cancel and book. MS told us one of the days was filling up really quickly and we had to make fast decision if we wanted to book. We said YES and she had us booked at Poly and cancelled at BLT. Within 5-10 min, that one day (a Friday night) was no longer available at Poly. Whew!

If using the same points you'd either have to cancel the old one and book the new one or call, waiting an hour thus reducing your chances of success. If you have enough points to hold both, book the new reservation then cancel the old one. There is a way to cancel one while holding the other online but I suspect others are better informed on that than I am. It's not an intended option but it apparently does work.

Keep in mind that member services can also loose your original reservation when making the switch if the new reservation is no longer available when they try to book. It is rare, but can happen. It happened to me a while back.

For December, I would not try to change! At least I would check OKW and SSR to see if something was available there just in case.

Thanks for all of the advice. I think that I will stick with BLT. I like the ability to walk to and from the Magic Kingdom, and hopping the monorail to Epcot.
