I keep seeing posts where people mention booking a room for cash through MS. How does this work?

Can I use it for a friend if I am staying in the resort and they want to stay there, too?

What are the rates typically?

Is it cheaper to do that than to book through the Disney World website?

Thank you!
Jennifer

You can book a cash room for a friend through MS, but you cannot book a discounted room through MS for anyone but the member. It's pretty much rack rate.

Do you know how much the discounted rate is?

The Member discount is 25%, but it isn't always available. If you have an AP, check the AP rates, too, they are sometimes cheaper. For either discount, especially the AP discount, the member/AP Holder will need to be an occupant of the room. Member services may allow you to book the discounted room for your friend, since you will be there on poits at the same time. If not, you can stay in the cash room, and your friend in the points room, and your friend can simply repay you the cost of the cash room.

Thank you very much, this is great information!

Just wondering about this myself- is it available only on dvc rooms or any rooms? When you say not always available- is there a time/season that you are more likely to be able to use it? How far in advance can you book it?

You can book it up to 11 months out. It is not uncommon for the discount to not be available at that time, but they can add it later if you call back. It doesn't seem to be more available in one season than in another, it seems to depend upon how much cash inventory they happen to have.

The member discount is for DVC Resorts only.

Is it possible to have my name on my points reservation and on the cash reservation? Or should I maybe put my hubby on the cash one and take him off my reservation? They are only needing to stay 2 nights, but we will be there for five nights.

A lot of that depends upon whether you will have a dining plan, as you'll have to pay for the occupants of the room, and all occupants need to be listed.

Personally, I would simply tell DVC that you have friends coming in for two nights, and ask if you can get them a room near yours at your resort with a DVC Discount. I think the chances are pretty good that they will allow that, since you are staying there at the same time. If you were simply renting a room for your friends, but you weren't going to be there, then I would be surprised if they gave you a discount.

If you book with the member discount, you get member housekeeping (day 4 trash & towel, etc). If it's adding to a points reservation, the cash nights can be linked and it will be treated like one stay. If you book through CRO with an AP rate for a DVC resort, you get daily housekeeping. You cannot link it, which could be good if you want to do the dining plan for part of the stay. I did it once and didn't have to change rooms, just get new keys.
