Booking borrowing/banking dilemma for the experts

I have an upcoming Feb reservation using the current Dec UY's points with a handful of pts left over. No issues here - I'm happy with this.

I would like to book a reservation for July to use our passes one more time before they expire and after the kids are out of school. This would require borrowing at least 50 points from our Dec 2010 UY.

The issue - there is a 50/50 chance I may need to cancel that reservation & given the school situation, I have no plans to go back down before Dec of 2010 - those 50 borrowed points would be lost (or I'd have to give/rent them away.)

So that I don't loose points, I was thinking it would be possible, to borrow from my next use year and apply them to this Feb trip, and then use current use year points to use on the July trip (point being, if I have to cancel the July trip before the 30day window, I can bank them into next year)

What I was told by MS: What I want to do cannot be done outright. I cannot borrow from my next use year just to apply those points to a currently booked reservation - but - if I borrowed them, booked a new reservation and then canceled that reservation, they could then be applied to my Feb vacation. This seems to be taking my already confusing idea and convoluting it even more. hehe.

So technically, it is possible, just very confusing. Is there a way to do this so I can keep track of what's going on? Have you ever done this and was it simpler than it sounds?

I have had this happen to me but it went down like what MS said. Had a reservation, canceled it and applied those borrowed points toward the reservation.

I needed to borrow 2011 points and apply them to an existing 2010 reservation so that I would have enough 2010 points to borrow into 2009 if a WL came through. The very good CM I was working with booked a fake 2010 reservation to allow the borrowing from 2011, then cancelled that reservation and used those borrowed points to free up some 2010 points. She warned me in advance that she was doing this and that this odd reservation would show up in my online activity. Apparently, the computer will not let the CM borrow points unless they are in connection with a reservation.

By the way, my WL came through later the same day! -- Suzanne

Yes, what MS said could be done if you need to cancel the July trip but will you actually know that before your Feb trip so they could reallocate?

Otherwise - If there is another room available for your Feb trip you could:

1)Cancel your current Feb and book the July using current points
2)re-book the Feb using the remaining current points and borrow the remainder.

Or.....

1)book part of the July trip using the current points to get your remaining total to the amount you want left for Feb.

2) book a second room for Feb. that then uses whatever current points are applicable and borrows new points.

3) cancel your current Feb. trip and finish booking your July trip the the current UY points that have been freed up.

The biggest piece I see is if you book July, cancel, and then try to re-book, you may have to be flexible with what is left when you re-book.

Even if you do it all in the same day, availability can change. As long as you are flexible for the July trip, I would do as MS said and book July with the borrowed points, cancel it, have the borrowed points applied to February, and then re-book with the current UY points.

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the help folks, I think my brain is ready for this.

The more I consider this the more I understand what the gentleman in MS was saying, and why it has to be done that way (it looks like the software needs a reason to pull the points to start with). I'm comfortable with calling tomorrow and booking my July trip, then doing the cancel/reallocate to Feb & rebook bit. I understand in the few moments it takes to move the points around whatever I have booked in July might be lost, but so be it.

Congrats on your WL Suzanne! That's amazing! :wizard: I hope I have similar luck in finding just the right room for us.
