Booked an economy, what are the chances of getting upgrade?

Well, due to some changes, we booked an economy car with Alamo thru Priceline for Dec 31-Jan 8.

Since it's NYE, what do you think are the chances of us getting upgraded to a compact?

If we do get an economy anyway, just exactly how much luggage can the car (geo metro/toyota echo) hold? I'm trying to plan our luggage according to the size of the trunk.

Though I am certainly not a rental car expert, based on my experience, Alamo will more than likely not have an economy (4dr chevy Aveo) available for you. You'll more than likely end up with a compact (4dr cavalier). If you're really lucky, perhaps a midsize (grand am).

How many are travelling & what ages are the kids. If you can only use the trunk I would figure 4 pieces of medium size luggage to be safe. If you have addtional room in the passenger compartment, add on from there.

I arrived on Dec 4th late at night and the selection was all Chevy Impala's, Pantiac Grand Prix's, a couple of Grand Am's, and one cavalier. I had booked an SUV, which they were out of, so they let me take a DeVille (they only had one of those). The counter person said that they have the biggest selection in the middle of the day, so your arrival time may play into your available vehicles.

We end up with an upgrade at least half the time.
With our last Alamo rental, we noticed that there was only one economy car yet. Another family was approaching, and from their conversation, we could tell that's the class they rented. We let them pass us and take the car, and we got an upgrade.
At other places that assign you a car, we've gotten upgrades when economies are out and also occasionally when they've been in...probably depends on your length of rental time too.

We're supposed to get there at 2pm, so I figure around 2:30-3pm pick up time. I've got 4 people - 2 kids will be in the back, so the trunk is the only space for luggage.

Normally, I just pack everyone's items in one large suitcase and one large duffel bag. I think I'll have to break that into smaller bags this time around.
