Grade 9 Male - not the least bit interested in Science Fiction but has to do an ISU (Independent Study Unit) worth 11% of summative mark for the semester - any suggestions from those who have been there.

To Kill a Mockingbird is out as it is required reading for Grade 10. I read and loved The Color of Water which I think would be a good read and an even better assignment book - any other suggestions?

My DS' favorite book as a freshman last year was All Quiet on the Western Front by Remarque. Another was The Right Stuff by Wolfe.

I have a recommened freshman/college bound book list somewhere I can pull out if you would like me to post some of the recommendations.

Monster, Montana 1948, The House of the Scorpion, Rats Saw God...I could go on and on. I am student teaching English this fall, so I have been pretty much saturated with high school appropriate books.

Truancy. It is written by a 15 year old by. My DS15 loved it.

Our kids are reading Kite Runner for their AP Am Lit Class this fall. Another book both my boys loved was Night by Elie Wiesel. It is memoirs from his time in a concentration camp.

Ok, can you go on and on? At least just a few more?:flower3:
My DS is a HS sophomore and while they have their required reading and a suggested summer reading list, we are always looking for quality literature since he loves to read so much.
THANK YOU! :teacher:

Catcher in the Rye - DS still talks about that one

We read The Hound of the Baskervilles and Of Mice and Men in school. Most of us kids, loved them. They are two of my favorites.

Keep them coming!

The Book Thief is this year's grade 9 required reading and of Mice and Men is grade 12 required reading so they can't be used for an ISU.

All suggestions are welcome - for both of us - I love to read and usually end up reading half the books suggested!

What about the Tolkien series, My DS loved those.
