i jiust had an idea for a book its about
a girl in a sothern colany who is part of a welthy family that owns a plantashon (sp?) and he falls in love with a black slave boy and then one day he gets sold and she goes after him

touchie subject for some. Dunno if I'd read it or not. But I do have a bit to say about the topic. Dont take this the wrong way, but this is what I thought about.

Its really hard to write about slaves during the plantation times. There is no way that you could actually replicate the horror that they went through, and I'm honestly not sure you'd want to try.

I'm sure that this plot actually happened to an extent, but there is no way a southern bell of the time would've went after a slave. Even one she loved. Women weren't respected then, and it simply wasn't done. Though, if you switch the genders to where a man is falling inlove with the female slave, it might be better. He could've just bought her back and nothign would be thought about it. Though, the "men" of the time never did fall in love with the slaves. Rape was much more common than love.

And you have to understand, slaves weren't people. They were property. Would you fall in love with your washing machine? No. thats how it worked in the south.

And I wouldn't say colony either. There wasn't a whole lot of slavery or plantation work going on in the colonies. I'd say state and I'd go for south carolina.

I know quite a bit about this topic if you need any help, though. I'm not saying dont write it, I'm just saying take what I said into account.

im not starting this yet ive read many storys about salves (sad ones) and i was thinking about switching it around any way wehere just geting into this in history class so i might wait

if youre really interested in slavery, read Uncle Tom's Cabin. That is the closest you'll ever get to as real as it was.

Don't write about something you don't know. If you know this matter through to a good extent, go for it. But with some ignorance, you might mention something that could and would offend someone...even inadvertantely.

Slavery is right up there with horrific events such as the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Trials, and the Holocaust. People went though a lot and as Sparx said, it's a touchy subject.

But hey, if you know your stuff exensively and you think you can create a story with it, but all means, go for it. :thumbsup2

I've had to do several reports over those in the past three or four years (probably five or six reports) and those are absolutly horrifying once you get past the sugar coat and into what actually happened. I've seen replicas of some of the tools used on those people. It actually gave me nightmares for a few weeks after I saw the tools and figured out what you did with them.

I know too much than is healthy for me about the Salem Witch Trials. It's a touchy subject up where I live considering Salem is no more than 30-40 minutes from where I live. I have been to Salem and I saw things...horrible things. I sat in the court room, I walked through the dungeon and I saw those cells. I went through the houses of judges and accused witches. I walked through a graveyard that held people such as Nathaniel Hawtorn and Cotton Mather and so many others...I couldn't get that sick feeling out of my stomach for a long long time and even to think about it brings back that feeling.

I've done uncountable research on the topic and it's truly unbelievable.

They were girls...little girls who had active imaginations.

I've never been there, but after seeing what I've seen of it and writing the same things over and over and reading all of that, I am sure I couldn't go. I know too much about that place to ever want to go there. For the short period of time that it happened in, so, so much happened. So much pain, death and hurt. I couldn't go there.

It's disturbing there, but very interesting. It's something to see the old houses and historic monuments. I mean, aside of the trials I saw the House of the Seven Gables. That was, of course, at the other end of Salem.

As far as the trials go while being in Salem, I think the worst of it was walking through the dungeons seeing the cells. The poor people had to spend years in cells half the size of my smallest closet chained to the wall unable to sit down. Then it would flood and rats lived there. The people couldn't scratch an itch and couldn't keep the rats away from them. It was pitch black down there and it would flood up to their waists. People would leave the cells completely insane! I mean, totally mental. Is there a question as to why? It's sick...just sick!

In the court room we saw the methods and the uses of those tools you talked about. It showed images of how the tools were used and described what they did and for what accusations each was used for.

I saw beds that were slept in by these well-known characters of the 1600's and I felt disturbed walking through the actual houses...but at the same time, it was interesing.

Salem village (where the trials were held) is NOTHING like Salem as you may think of it where the churchs (meeting houses) were, where the fields are. In fact, some people even live in Salem Village now. After leaving, you can't ever get rid of this feeling that I can't explain.

Not to mention, I've NEVER seen so many "cross-dressers" in one place at one time in my life. I don't have a problem with the way people express themselves, but I won't lie when I say people were scary there!! One guy insisted he was a vampire. Also, because it's Salem, a lot of the stores hold items that speak of the Wiccan religion.

lol, in salem I think the cross dressers would be the last thing on my mind. ;)

They are the public people lol. Salem is not how I imagined it. Before I went I imagined it to look like the place I saw in pictures. I imagined it to look old and quaint. It wasn't like that at all. It is a built community with stores museums and houses. It has street vendors and even a Ben and Jerry's! lol. You need to walk around Salem to see the old houses and such. You can't avoid the people so really, it becomes a part of your thoughts...among the awful thoughts of witch accusations. The "weird" people (not talking about cross-dressers anymore haha!) would be displaying themselves on the streets by either making music (horrible, evil music lol -- I've never heard such disturbing lyrics! lol). They would also be doing magic shows and/or be trying to sell the people things that I still can't get out of my mind lol. Being at Salem was weird, for me. I can't explain it but the feeling never left me. It's weird.

sounds like a good book (story) :thumbsup2

It's a good idea, but it's not an easy subject. Pretty much all I have to say is summed up in Shelby's post.
