BAH! After many torturous days I finally discovered that a Groupon deal was the Desert Palms and that it would meet our needs nicely. THEN I discovered that I couldn't book for June. Is it a better idea to chill for a few weeks and watch the deals. Sometimes with discounted bookings later is better right? I just don't want to end up not getting the dates I need (June 6-9, and I think I'll book somewhere else for 4-5 and see Universal and whatever else looks fun).

I always book as early as possible. I have found rates always go up and very rarely ever come down, especially for summer months.

There is no reason to delay booking your hotel. Most hotels offer room rates which are easily cancelled up to a day prior to arrival. I always book well in advance of our dates. I have though had rates drop. I contact the hotel about two weeks before our trip to see if the rates have dropped since we booked and twice this has happened and they updated my rate to the current one. On our last trip though the rates were actually higher but of course I was able to keep the rate I originally booked with. I thought it was very nice of the hotel to adjust my rate when it had dropped though, but that was just because they still had plenty of availability. However, if you are going during a busy time though, then rates are only going to increase closer to the dates.

We always book early as we rarely ever see the rates go down the closer it gets to our dates.

Like the OP said book something now and if you do find someing lower you can always cancel.

I wood book early (which reminds me...) because as others have said, the prices only seem to go up but there's another reason;
It's a strange phenomenon but even during the slowest time of the year you can try to book a hotel a two or three months in advance only to find it's full.
I actually gave up on HoJo because they never had a vacancy when we called (besides, we like BWPPI and PVI).
