Its not just one place that he will lick,he licks everything. He will lick himself for hours, will lick me, the bed, furniture, the floor anything. It's all he wants to do anymore and I don't know why. He doesn't really like to go outside anymore or play. Just lick. Anyone else have this problem with their dog???

Yes I have one licker. Maybe we could form a support group?

Does your do it all of the time? I'm worried because Bogart was so playful and then he started licking, and then licking more, and now it's all he ever does.

Yeah she does it all of her waking hours it seems. She's elderly (12) and it got bad probably 3 or 4 years ago. Hers got so bad that she actually developed a rash on her face and chin from licking my leather sofa. It cleared up with meds and hasn't come back in several months. I adopted her at 7 yo and she hasn't ever been really active... always lazy. pug:

My Minnie Mouse (Pomeranian) is a licker! It drives me crazy, but I love her to death. Her puppy trainer told us that all we can do is go "Ehh Ehh" sternly when she does it to make her stop...sometimes she does, other times she doesn't!

I had to laugh when I saw this.

My dog licks herself, the carpet,, the pillows, me, my mom, the floors, her empty bowl...anything!

Mine do too, but did you know this can indicate a health problem (usually allergies)? You should take your dog to the vet!

I was going to say the same thing. Usually excessive licking is allergies.

I think I'm going to take him to the vet later today. He is acting really depressed and not like himself at all. I'm really worried about him.

Ash, is he jealous of Sophie?

My cockapoo did this. It's allergies. She actually went to an allergist and is on shots! (This is the dog that I got because of my allergies... :lmao: ) Anyway, when the licking is at it's worst, it's like a dermatitis, so she has to take an anti-fungal for it. It works like a charm, after a couple of days, the licking totally ceases. But if her allergies flare up, she's back to licking, and back to the med.

However, she generally only licks her paws and her hind parts, since that's where the dermatitis resides.

Good luck!

Ok....can someone explain the correlation between the licking and the allergies?

My beagle picks spots on the carpet and licks and licks and licks the same spot over and over again. He was recently diagnosed with allergies (he had eye drainage and chronic ear infections). We have had him on antihistamines for over a month now and he is doing much better. I haven't really noticed too much licking recently, so I am curious to see if that really was the cause. I don't quite see how they correlate though so would love some insight.

My Kaeleigh the collie is a licker big-time. She once licked the pads down on her feet so raw I had to cover her leg with a sock to keep her from doing more damage. She also compulsively licks our pillows, any shirt we have worn (under the arms is her fave spot to lick) and if you are sitting or lying down, she will lick your face until you physically push her away. [I let her do it once w/o pushing her away just to see how long she would lick for, and after 10 minutes, I finally told her to back off]
Her big brother Malcolm the collie is not a licker at all. He sometimes bites his tail and gets hot spots, but he doesn't lick much. He just started giving DH and I "kisses" recently.

Could it be that their tongue is itchy?

I don't know anything about dogs, but Bogart is way cute. And I'm happy for him that he has a new hobby! :)

My sister has a beagle who is a compulsive floor licker. He does have allergies and takes medication as needed. I'll have to ask her if he licks less when taking meds.
