Families Attend Easter party; Dodd Columns Praised
WAR ON IRAQ
By GWEN O'BRIEN
Tribune Staff Writer
Kelly Knight, 11, of South Bend assists magician Kevin Wilson with a trick during a party Saturday for the families of South Bend area Marine reservists currently stationed in Iraq. Her brother is Cpl. Bobby Knight, 25, of South Bend.
Patty Knight, mother of Cpl. Bobby Knight, 25, brought along the scrapbook she's making for her son to give people ideas on how to chronicle their loved ones' experiences. Included in the album are articles and pictures by The Tribune's Fred Dodd, who is embedded with the reserve unit.
"When they come home, my son gets the first hug and Fred gets the second one," Knight said.
Cpl. Knight was featured in a Dodd photograph that was published March 13. Knight was singing into the handle of a shovel while taking a break from building bunkers at Camp Betio in northern Kuwait.
"There's my son," said Patty Knight, pointing the picture out to another mother.
"Oh, there's mine!" said the mother, Kathy Breece of Lafayette. Her son is Cpl. Chad Pruitt.
Ironically, the two photographs of the mothers' sons ran on the same day.
"I rush out to get my newspaper every morning at 6 a.m. to read Fred Dodd's reports," said Knight, who, like many soldiers' families, has not received any mail since the start of the war.
"My friend's son is in the Army's 3rd Infantry in Baghdad, and she hasn't heard from him in a month. I told her, 'You need a Fred Dodd,'" Knight said with a chuckle.
