Bob Iger Makes 51.1 MILLION in Fiscal 2008

executive compensation is totally ridiculous...
salary of $2 million, bonus of $13.9 million, additional benefits valued at another million or so..
and options worth tens of millions of dollar, that while currently worthless, have several years to recover their value..

but even without the options, the salary/bonus is completely ridiculous...

yeah, while the frontline CMs..you know the people who actually make the magic and keep people coming back, get 7.50/hr

Maybe Iger can pay my heating bill. You practically need to make the money he does to heat your house up here in the frozen north! :faint:

I guess I don't understand why this is wrong. A guy heads up a major company and he makes MILLIONS and people that operate carnival rides only make a few dollars an hour and this is wrong??? I know that Disney has been cutting corners and such but why does that make this wrong?

Disclaimers:
This is an honest question

I don't make millions

I have great respect for castmembers or anyone else that makes a comprable sallary(I have been there before with a family of five)

When you get laid off....or your hours get cut to the point that you cant afford milk AND bread at the same time and the company you work for is cutting back drastically on the things that have made it so popular in the first place....come tell us that you still think there is nothing wrong with your boss making 51 million dollars a year.

As for the remark about running carnival rides....well...I think that phrasing was chosen to create controversy.

I have no doubt it takes a lot of work to run a company the size of Disney. I do have a problem with the fact that Disney continues to take away things from the guests(fantasmic, character dining, park hours, stroller increase) while charging more every year for the same ticket.
That is why I choose to be a frontline CM. Because if there isn't someone on the front lines giving people a good time( while the execs continue to take away things from the guests) Then Disney will die a slow hard death.

I still don't think that it is wrong. As far as the "carnival ride" thing, I didn't say it for controversy, I said it to make a point. I too have had jobs that required little or no skills and I got paid accordingly. I have been a grunt on a framing crew and I have been a button pusher in a factory and have been laid off from both. My point is that when you preform a job that almost anyone can do you don't get paid well. I have the utmost respect and appreciation for castmembers and I wish they made more money.

Just a question for anyone. Instead of how much money he doesn't deserve, how much should he make?

Also, if the Gov bailed out Disney and he made that much I would be pissed.

Knowing the Disney name operates many different divisions/subsidiaries (I am thinking under the lines of theme parks, cruise line, hotel/resorts, ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel, Disney sirius/xm, etc....) does Iger oversee them all?

I guess if he does, it pays to be king. It seems like a very signficant raise from 2007, and I have always wondered who determines your performance raises if you are the top dog....but I would expect significant compensation for any person in charge of such an empire. I am neither shocked or upset...if the company does poorly, he's the one out the door, along with his $51 mil paycheck. He's got alot on the line. I agree with littlebob on his last line of the above post...if the gov't handed him money for a bailout (who knows....it could happen these days), then I'd be singing a different tune.

It is insane that any one person makes that much money when the company he is employed by is making more and more cuts to guests and staff. There was a time in this country that the CEO only made 4 times the salary of the employee not 400 times the salary. Way out of whack if you ask me. I feel this is how our economy got in the trouble we are now in. Corporate execs raping the system. This is WHY it is not fair.

One of the main reasons that our econemy has taken a hit is because poeple were buying houses that they couldn't afford with sub prime loans and then adding a nice car payment on them. The unemployment problem has started since then. People not living beneath their means. CEO's making that much money didn't cause that.

I guess we can agree to disagree on this topic. Not all the housing problems came from people who couldnt afford their homes. This is very untrue where I live; a major banking state. People "average" Joes are going under every day and the CEO's and execs are getting off scott free. It is all a bunch of BS and I think alot of people think like you that the only problem causing this is people who couldnt afford homes. That is not the case. Unemployment is the bigger issue and there is no reason 100 people at the bank get laid off while the Upper Management still make thier 6 figures. Everyone needs to have cuts not just the little guy. And yes I think that salary is insane!!! Period ...no one deserves to make that much money.

Iger makes alot of money. Enough money to buy all the cake or pie he wants. Ahhhhh pie. Especially banana creme pie. I love it. Cheese cake is good to. There's always room for some delicious dessert. Strawberry shortcake is good in the summer. Cinnamon buns are the best in the winter. In case you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about, I'm hijacking this thread. Politics, religion and all other hot button issues aren't as fun to discuss as the great pie VS. cake debate. Where do you stand on this extremely important issue?! :goodvibes

I'm a coconut cream gal myself. Unless there's a good slice of key lime staring at me....

Key lime sounds good to me!!! Unless there's a great devil's food cake around with vanilla icing!! Then that's my winner.

I have a problem with this bonus thing, because I truly believe the cutbacks are being made throughout the parks just to protect these people's bonuses. Almost makes you not want to go....................... almost.

OK, I have never joined in the pie vs. cake fight :rotfl:

Would I be kicked out of the club (I say this, not really sure if I have made it to the club yet :) ) if I asked why you would choose pie OR cake when there is ice cream and cookies??

There's room for all of them in my belly!!!! :thumbsup2
