Bloody Mary legend (not the drink LOL)

Ugh, my 8 yr old dd came home from school terrified today, because some kid told her the story of Bloody Mary. Say her name in front of the mirror three times and she comes and kills you. Wasn't that nice of them to share???? How do kids this young hear this stuff? She is not going to sleep tonight, I can tell. She smiles and says "hey, I keep forgetting about Bloody Mary", which means to me that she trying to convince herself of it, but it's not working. I told her it's garbage, and that they've been telling that story forever, but I don't think that's gonna help when it's bedtime. I heard the same story when I was a kid, but her name wasn't Bloody Mary, I think it was Mary something, but I can't remember the rest, does anyone else know the story with a different name? It's going to be a long night I fear!

It was also a movie and a couple of sequals called "Candyman". Same idea, say Candyman 3 times, and he shows to up kill you.

Ah yes, I forgot about that movie. She just went to bed, we'll see how long before she gets back up. Poor thing, I feel so bad for her.

The first time I heard a variation of the story (say someone's name in the mirror three times, they come out and kill you), I was in elementary school, probably 4th grade or so. So she's not too young to have heard it.

Oh, and I'm still terrified. I don't go to the bathroom in the dark, ever. (Because, obviously, you can't be killed when the light is on. )

Oh, poor girl! You can tell her I tried that Bloody Mary thing over and over again when I was a kid and she never came and killed me. It's just a story.

I will NOT do the Candyman one, however.

No Candyman huh? LOL. Actually she went to sleep just fine and I didn't hear a peep out of her. I told her if the story were true, we'd all be dead LOL, since we all heard the story when we were kids.

my sister slept with a scarf covering her bedroom mirror for this very reason. for all i know she still does.

Yep, Mary Worth.
I must have been about 7 or 8 when the cousins told me about it. I was scared to look in the mirror at bedtime for years after that! LOL.

Mary Worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!! That has been bugging me since she came home yesterday! You know it's funny timing, we are re-doing her room, and her mirror is currently in the basement being painted. I think that's probably a good thing.

Eeks!! I got goosebumps just thinking about that!! My friends used to do it in elementary school.. I was always the one hiding in my sleeping back awaiting their imminent deaths. IMHO, it's still scary!!!!

Oh candyman I will not do. I am terrified of going near a mirror at night. All those scary stories may come true, because you know I have heard so many stories about people who have been killed by someone coming through a mirror. Scary!!! Thats a crazy fear, but it sticks with you through childhood and adulthood!!!
