Black or stainless steel appliances?

I prefer stainless. Sears has some really nice stainless at good prices.

I don't know, but I will be interested in the answers because I read way back when that there is a trick to keeping the prints to a minimum on stainless steel appliances and I cannot remember it. Now I have a stainless steel microwave and it constantly looks fingerprinted.

So, I am hoping someone 'in the know' will post.

I don't have any black appliances, so I can't help you there. But thanks for asking this!

I was leary of that as well....fingerprints and all...but they have wonderful cleaning products now for the stainless steel. "STAINLESS STEEL MAGIC WIPES"...I get at Bed, Bath and Beyond. They are wipes that just wipe down my refridge, microwave, stove, dishwasher.

The stainless steel looks so nice. :sunny:

But remember NO MAGNETS, the refridge does not hold any more magnets if you are someone that as ONE MILLION magnetic items on your applicances...zero w/ss!! No biggie, you get used to it!! :sunny:

Love the stainless steel....that is MY pick :thumbsup2

We shopped around as we were building this home, and bought everything and a really good deal at Home Depot. All my appliances are G.E.!!! :sunny:

I've got the black ones (oven and dishwasher), and while I do like them, they seem to show stuff a lot more than you'd thing they would. If you don't clean them very carefully, any streaks left will show. If you have a pet inside the house, static electricity seems to want to pull that stray hair or two to the surface and that shows up. My white fridge is MUCH better at not showing things.

DD and her DH are trying to decide between the two for when we move to the other house.. Of course they'll only go with the stainless steel if they can get a really good bargain because those prices are way up there..

But what do you all think in terms of keeping the outsides of them clean? Fingerprints on the fridge, spills on the stove, etc.?

Anyone here have one or the other?
stainless, but brushed stainless looks nicer...IMHO

In my house it is the exact opposite. My black dishwasher and stove never really look dirty, but my poor white fridge..... I am constantly seeing marks and dirt on it. Take into consideration though that I have 2 kids, 4 dogs, and two cats. They can make any house dirty in a matter of minutes!!

I was told that both black and stainless steel showed a lot of fingerprints. We finally decided on getting black (Although we still have a few months to change our minds :) )

Whirlpool makes a fridge that looks like stainless steel, but has a plastic coating and you can use magnets.
I've had both. The black was easy to clean with Windex and a paper towel. My stainless needs that stainless cleaner and a soft cloth. I tried the wipes but they left streak marks. They were dripping wet. Maybe I got a bad batch.
I agree that black really darkens a kitchen and I like a lot of light in my kitchen.

I have pearlized, stained white cabinets (looks like Tuscany style), Uba Tuba Granite (Deep green with lots of gold veins), hardwood floors - and we went with nickel hardware and stainless steel (oven and sink). My fridge is paneled with cabinet wood and so is my dishwasher. My stove is Black glass (electric) - DAKO.

My stove has no stratches and my sink is nearly new looking - it's been heavily used over the past 7 years. The stove is the hardest item to keep clean, but it looks great.

Good Luck.

Does the stainless steel scratch easily?

Personally I hate the idea of black appliances in the kitchen - it makes the room seem so dark (and yes - they have pets: a dog and 2 cats) - and I don't know what they'll do about "magnets" if they get the stainless steel because they're always sticking things on the fridge with magnets..

We have been in our home 6 months and I just went over and did an "examination" and cannot see any scratches at all on any of the appliances!!!!! :thumbsup2

We have a stainless fridge and black stove and dw. I love them all! The stainless cleaner does wonders for the fridge and my stove and dw aren't to bad. (I have 2 kids and 2 cats) I love all my appliances, we've had them for a bit over 2 years now. W/ our fridge, it is black on the sides, so that is where we put the magnets. We haven't had any problems w/ scratches.

Haven't had a problem with scratches in SS yet.... as for fingerprints, my Kitchenaid refrig seems to be easier to put prints on and more difficult to get them off, but my GE SS ovens seem to be MUCH easier to keep looking nice. May just be me however....

We have a brushed stainless Kuppersbusch side by side fridge/freezer and magnets stick to it without problems! :confused3

I was waivering between black and stainless, and finally decided on the stainless.... I love it. I do not find it hard to keep clean. There are several products you can use to wipe them down with. Mine have not scratched yet, and I've had them for about 9 months. I also do not have little one's, but I do have teens, which can be just as bad.

I also went with real stainless and not the brushed look. I really do not like the look of that, to me it doesn't even look like stainless at all.

I prefer the look of stainless, but sometimes I wonder if black would have been easier to keep clean. Apparently now there are stainless appliances that don't show fingerprints and I wish that had been available when we bought ours.

Also, the cleaner that we have smells very bad and is very strong -- so I don't clean them as often as I should -- I'm going to have to check out these wipes that you all are talking about from Bed Bath and Beyond. :teeth: Thanks for the advice!
