Friday 25th May – Juneau.

Another early day, we’re up at 7.00am. Passengers get to disembark at 7.30am and once we have had breakfast, we are off at 8.30am and the views are wonderful. We do some window-shopping and purchase some stamps and postcards from the post office.

Our tour today is a helicopter flight to the Mendenhall Glacier, and we on board the bus by 9.35am. By 10.00am we are in the Temsco Helicopter building and watch the training/safety video and the put on our glacier boots. We are not allowed to take much on the aircraft, just our camera and coats, etc, so our bags are locked in lockers. We are assigned our seats and I get to ride upfront, but it is a bit of a squeeze! Onboard and we set off over the mountain range and we get to see our first view of the glacier – oh my god! What a sight.

We land and spend about 30 minutes on the glacier with a team a specialists. We taste the glacier water and it’s amazing, so fresh. Back on the helicopter and our flight back takes no time at all.

Finally back at the boat and we were going to take the Mount Roberts Tramway, but the cost puts us off, another $28.00 each, so we don’t bother. We return to our cabin to change our coats as it has started to rain.

Get off the boat again and its shopping time. We visit Juneau Library, in order to use the free Internet Service. I need to send a message home as our phones won’t work in Alaska. The library looks so new and I put a donation in the box. TIP – before you spend lots of money in a Internet Café, check out the local libraries as they often has free broadband Internet service, and if it’s not free, it’s a damn sight cheaper than on board ship.

Once back on board we have lunch in the Horizon Court and wait for Ice Cream at 3.30pm, yummy again, so whilst we’re waiting I write postcards home, which will be posted by the Pursers Desk. In hindsight, I should have gone ashore again and posted them in Juneau, as they would have arrived much sooner.

Afternoon trivia again and we come 2nd. We do better in the 70’s early evening trivia, only two teams competing and only Rick and I in our team, we win. We present the other team with 4 of the 6 prizes as a consolation. We have dinner in the Florentine Dining Room with another 2 diners and have quite a nice evening. Name That Tune at 9.30pm was rubbish – the quizmasters spend too much time chatting and laughing. We have had a long day, even if it did rain quite a lot in the afternoon, but it was great. Early night tonight, as we have another early day tomorrow.

The glacier looks amazing

What a fantastic experience that trip must have been. The glacier looks amazing, a great opportunity. I could definitely cope with ice cream every afternoon too!
