Saturday 2nd June 2007 A trip to San Diego.
Wake up to another grey day, but we are ready and out of the house by 10.30am. There is no sign of Alexis, but she was not coming with us today.
Rick and I visited San Diego some years ago as part of our coach trip around California and promised ourselves that we would return.
We hit the freeway after filling up with gas - $3.35 a gallon. Cheap.
There is heavy traffic around Oceanview and Carlsbad, but we arrive at Balboa Park at about 12noon. We park the car and notice that there is some kind of automotive rally taking place, just outside the park. We take some time looking at all the American cars on display; there is also one British car a Ford Capri.
We walk round to the Aeronautics Museum and enjoy looking at all the aircraft on display, including the various space craft and memorabilia. We look round the rest of the park the Spreckles Organ (they have free concerts every Sunday), and the Lath House with all the Orchids. They are really beautiful.
We walk back thorough the park and collect the car. Yoda (GPS) directs us to Old Town where we have Cold Stone Ice Cream and a good look around all the old buildings, even if they are a bit touristy. We have to make a move after 2hrs, as thats all the free parking will allow.
Off again and Yoda, directs us to Seaport Village. We have a quick look round the shops and have an early dinner of Fish & Chips. We only get 2hrs free parking here, so we head off again this time our final destination The Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island.
The hotel is lovely, but very expensive. There are a lot of wedding receptions being held here today, in the grounds, reception rooms and even on the beach. Its nice to be able to wander round such a beautiful building and try and picture where Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis filmed Some Like it Hot.
It is getting cold, so once back in the car, the GPS directs us back towards Capistrano Beach, but on the way back we stop of in Carlsbad and Wal-Marts.
We finally get home and were in bed by 10.30pm. We have had a really great day, the sun shone from about 1.00pm until 5.00pm, so we did warm up a little.
