Two years ago my DW and I were cruising on Carnival. Our birth certificates blew out of our carry on as we got in our car in a blizzard to go to the airport. I noticed they were missing and called my dad at the layover. He found them in a snowdrift in our front yard. We had to sign a waiver to get on the ship that stated that the cruise line would not be responsible if customs detained or arrested us. We signed it and got on board, and then called my dad and had him fax copies of them to the ship. The call from Cozumel was $80! It's good thing we had them, even though they were not the originals or they would not have let us off the ship in Key West.
From this trip on, I will be making photocopies of our plane tickets, birth certs., park tickets, and ressies and putting them in a different bag than the originals.
You might want to add this to your packing lists. It's only a small amount of weight to your luggage but takes a lot of weight off your mind when the unexpected occurs.
