My boyfriend and son went 2 weeks ago for their passport and paid to have it expedited. My son already received his passport. My boyfriend got a letter this past weekend saying he wrote the wrong social ( he probably wrote it sloppy). I'm afraid it wont come in time. The passport agency also has his birth certificate. Will an unofficial copy of the BC work in case his passport doesn't come in time? Oh also our cruise is April 11th.

Unfortunately, it needs to be an official BC with a raised seal. Some states can expedite getting a copy. I know we do here. Good luck!

Get his stuff sent back ASAP and you'll probably be fine. The girl at the post office forgot to sign my paperwork. My husband and daughter got theirs and a few days later I got a letter. It was totally their fault and the letter said so. I had to do another appointment and re-do the paperwork, send the second mug shot, etc but they kept my documents. It came very quickly after that. They sent a pre-addressed envelope to use with the second round that routed it to the correct desk once it got there. It was a pain but it got fixed quickly and all I had to pay was postage for the second round to go in the envelope they sent.

So...

legal things mean legal wording. When you don’t see the actual legal wording for things, that means something.

Here is the wording for the type of Bc you need to get a passport. Notice the word “certified”. And the mention of the seal of the issuing authority

Now look at what word is missing on the cruise page and the CBP page.

If they required a certified copy for a US citizen on a closed loop cruise, they would say it.

Is this a hill I would die on? Probably not. I’d probably work on ordering yet another certified copy of my BC (the ones my state made are apparently made out of tissue paper...I’m on my 3rd).

But if push came to shove, if they meant “certified“ they’d say it. And they don’t say it.

Oh and yes states make non-certified copies of BCs. That’s why there can be a difference.
