We're driving down to the World in a little over a week. We drove once before and went through Montgomery/Troy/Dothan to I-10, then to I-75 and it went fine, other than getting very tired of all the lights before we got on I-10. On the way back, we went through Atlanta and that was fine too, but I think we just got very lucky to not run into any problems there.

This time, we are considering going 280 to Auburn, then through Columbus and Albany, then south on I-75 at Tifton. I've heard that route is a good one as it cuts down on the stop lights, etc., but that info isn't very current.

Has anyone done that route lately? If so, how did it go? If not, any thoughts on why it wouldn't be a valid choice?

Thanks so much!

Hi Leslie. How ya been?

The Auburn-Tifton run computes out to be about 15 minutes longer than the Montgomery-Dothan-I10 route. Of course, that's not a big differential but you have a HUGE variable in Birmingham trying to go down Highway 280 (depending on time of day) for several miles south of town. Never done the Auburn route since it's loser in most time/distance calcs.

We've driven the 'Ham-Atlanta-WDW route (since it's all Interstate) and back but I hate the Atlanta traffic ANY time of day. And it seems we always slow down to a crawl for whatever reason headed north approaching I-675.

Since I tow my popup to the Fort every time we go, I've pretty much settled on the Dothan route. Sure there are several lights as you loop around the bypass but by and large it's the best general route. Of course, the unexpected can happen anywhere.

It's not much difference so if you want to try it, go for it. Statistically speaking it's not going to be much different. This time, maybe so. Next time, not so. That's the way the math works.

We're headed back to the Fort in March and we'll go the Dothan route again.

Later!

Hey Ed! Thanks for your response! Hope all is well with you. You still running?

I think we'll end up going through Dothan after all. It does seem to be the most likely to give success at getting there the quickest.

Hope you have a great trip to the Fort in March!

Leslie

Hey fellow Bama folks - we've driven both ways agree that both routes have their pos and cons - for one thing - the Auburn-Tifton thing goes through areas where the speed limit jumps around (55 to 35 to 40 to 65) as you go through the little towns and stuff and so time wise it's a wash:drive:

Let me throw one more route into the mix -
Montgomery - Troy - Dothan per usual - In Dothan take 84E to Bainbridge, GA and from Bainbridge take the Ga-Fla Hwy (Hwy 27) - you come out by Tallahassee to hit I-10 - we like going this way - it's an easy drive and somehow you feel like you cut a chunk out of the I-10 stretch..:hourglass

Have a great trip!

Thanks, wiserabbit! I'm going to show DH that route and see if he wants to try it.

Hope y'all have a good weekend!
