I adore Bill Nye. I've decided not to watch the news again for a few days.. but I have been checking online to keep updated. I just can't see the videos that they're showing. Too devastating.

What did he say about the situation? I'm wondering because in some reports they're saying it's not serious and in others they're saying a catastrophe is imminent.

There were 2 experts on there. Both thought it is probably worse than what Japan is letting on. Nye said it is probably going to be worse than Three Mile Island, because significant radiation has already leaked. At the time, they cooling the core with ocean water, which is not the pure water that should be used. They were also dumping Boron on it and they didn't quite know what the purpose of that was.

I don't know what's happened overnight. I'm kind of scared to look.

Actually, not much radiation has been released. What has been has been released has occurred via the venting that has/is being done to control the pressures in the 2 presure vessels.
Also, using pure water or light water in a BWR is only important if you plan on using the reactor again in the future, otherwise it works perfectly fine to cool the rods. Boron is being introduced as it is a neutron absorber. It acts as a poision to the process of nuclear fission.
