We bought DS a toddler scooter and a tricycle for his 3rd birthday next week. We also bought him a toddler sized bike helmet designed for ages 2-4.

Well, I tried the helmet on him today and it doesn't fit at all. I even removed the extra velcro pads from the inside - no go. It won't push down on top of his head.

If the toddler size is too small, will the child's size fit? I am afraid it will be too big?

Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated. This is my first bike helmet experience. :goodvibes

ETA - DS is totally accident prone so a good fitting helmet is very important.

Measure his head. There should be measurements on the box of the helmet.
Some of them have them online as well. Or if you buy your helmet from a bike store -they can help you with fit.
Good for you -helmets are so important.

I forgot to mention there are adjustable helmets too.
They have a knob that you twist that makes the inside band tighter or looser.

either go to a reputable bike store or does your ambulance service provide fittings .......we are lucky in our area to have both good bike stores and also ambulance carriers that provide proper fitting of the helmets..

As others have said take your son to a bike store. Both my boys have big heads and were never able to wear a toddler size helmet. Both DS8 and DS10 wear adult helmets now for both skiing and biking.

The children's hospital in our area "fits" and sells bike helmets, and VERY inexpensive too...in the $10 range.

My son too at 9 I think he was wearing an adult at 6 - his batting helmet

Also I strongly encourage you to invest in wrist guards for the scooter. My son broke is arm ulna and radius this summer failing off his scooter on a a slight incline. My son wore his guards when he was little then we got lazy :sad2:
