Hi. I saw the last 45 min of the two hour special last night,DD18 saw it too. Now the big weigh in. Do they get weighed every week or every other week? Doctors has always said the safe weight loss is average 2-3 pounds a week. Now WOW look at them, 20-30 lbs, the first weigh in. :confused3

I just went to find the answer. I got this from a post from the Biggest Loser Forum.

I download Jillian's radio show every week and she has addressed this issue. She says that it's not unhealthy to lose weight quickly, it's just not very realistic for the average person. The folks on the show exercise 4-5 hours per day and eat somewhere around 1800-2000 calories per day. That kind of regimen just isn't realistic for most people, so 1-2 pounds a week is what's generally "recommended." She says if you're getting your nutrition and working it off (rather than starving it off) it can be healthy to lose weight quickly.

BTW - to listen to Jillian's show go here:

then click "Jillian on demand" and look for her picture. It's a great show

Also, if you check the credits at the end of the show sometimes they sneak in a disclaimer about the time elapsed on the show being more than a week. I can't remember exactly how it's phrased, but DH and I have seen it there once that I know of. ;)

Thanks Melanie for the link to Jillian's show!

But you also have to realize that they have NOTHING to do but exercise. They do 2 hours of cardio and 1 hour of strength with the trainers each day and then whatever else they do on their own. That is a lot of calories being burned.

It would be impossible to actually lose that much weight in the real world. And by watching the reunion show, it was aparrent that you can not maintain that type of loss either.

Hey- I listened to part of the Jillian show last night, but I fell asleep. It seemed pretty interesting. I think I'm going to listen to her podcast each week.

For people in the real world, losing that much and exercising is that realistic. I'm certain that they work hard to make sure the contestants are kept safe and have many dr's on hand. While it would be better to lose weight slowly for their skin's elasticity sake, I'm sure most of them would never be able to get to the healthy state they are in at the end of the show without the intense "boot camp" they go through. I think it has saved several lives.

i just played Jillian's podcast and didn't hear that question. i wonder if that was last week's show?

it was still good and very interesting. i must say i think i like her better than i did prior just off her show-personality

got some really good info on strength training too -- so thanks for the link!

I truly believe that the body gets used to whatever you do. Ie.on BL... hours and hours of exercise. And when that changes, as it must in "real life", that the body reacts to that. Like disneychrista said, that's probably why some of the BL contestants have gained some back.

I will lose weight slowly....25 pounds so far in a year because of this fact. I won't make one change that I can't see keeping forever. And that, for me, includes eating all foods that I adore. And exercising in a way that I can keep weekly, monthly...for life.

However, I do think in the end that the show, just as another poster said, that it was a life saver for many of them.
