DD is 8 and a HUGE disney fan... (I raised her right, what can I say?)... thus comes to our problem...

She has had people in her class tell her the Mickey is NOT real... now we all know that is wrong... but how do I help her handle this?... Should I tell her *the truth* or let her continue?...

Thanks in advance... :worried:

IMO she is eight years old, I think she knows he isn't real ;)

And if she doesn't, I think the kids will tease her if she defends the fact that Mickey Mouse is real. Sorry, mom--Time to tell the truth. I bet she will smile and say "I knew that!"

The characters may be people in a costume, but the magic is real :wizard:

I second that she knows he is not real.......my daughter even at 4 years old knew that without me even telling her...when I said "oh look its Mickey Mouse "she would just look at me and say "mom, you know thats just a person in a costume don't you??" sure ruined my magic LOL!!

All our kids love Disney and Mickey but they also know it is just a person in a costume. Tell her that the magic of mickey lives in her heart and that itself is real and what counts.

thanks for all of the advice... I knew this day would come... :( :sad1:

My kids would say the same thing, I would just say they are real and I would continue to argue with them. Of course I have three of them to gang up on me. Once you get there they get just as excited to see the characters. Last trip my 11 year old son said - no autograph book for me. As soon as we got to the Crystal Palace he turned to me and asked if I brought his book which of course I did. Now the 13 year old wanted nothing to do with characters or autographs and I respected that. Last trip neither boy wanted to have their picture taken but 11 year old dD at the time, said don't worry Mom I'll always pose with you. It was especially fun when Mickey kept pointing at her shirt and making arm gestures and she said "Mom that is a girl who plays field hockey in there" and MM started jumping up and down. So they make great memories whether they "believe" or not. Even DS still talks about the time Goofy pulled out his chair at the LIberty Tree Tavern.

Tell her that Mickey is real. He can be touched, hugged, and kissed. This is not the original Mickey but the happiness that this Mickey brings to many people is VERY real.

I believe.

This is how my kids understand it. They also know that it is a real person inside the costume sharing the magic with us.

My DS7 still believes in the characters but DD5 shocked me at McD's the other day. :( She was looking at the display of the toys when we were waiting for our food & pointed out Goofy. She then smiled sweetly & said Mommy that isn't Goofy. That is a person in there. I asked how they got inside since you can see a person's face when they wear a costume & you can't see one on Goofy. She agreed & said that she hoped that she didn't hurt Goofy's feelings thinking that a person was inside him. We talked about how it would hurt if someone was inside her. LOL!

My 7 yo dd believes in the magic but calls the characters "fake people" :teeth:

I agree with this.
