We are visiting the US from Australia in September and are planning to do a week in Las Vegas, a week in Anaheim and then about 4 days in San Diego.

What would be the best way to get to and from all of these places? Should we hire a car or would transport by a coach bus be better?

I was thinking of catching a bus from Vegas to Anaheim. Is there any you would recommend? I've seen the LUX bus advertised quite a bit. Then when we're in Anaheim, we'd like to do some day trips to LA. Is it best to also get a bus there. We'll be doing one day at Universal Studios and then one day doing a Hollywood tour. I think most tours offer a bus service to and from hotels in Anaheim.

After our week in Anaheim, we'll then be travelling to San Diego. Is it best to hire a car to travel down here? I'm not sure which hotel we'll be staying at yet but we want somewhere close to Seaworld and the zoo. I'm thinking it will probably be easier to hire a car and then we'll be able to make our own way around and see the sights. How much would it cost to hire a car to drive from Anaheim to San Diego and rent it out for about 4 days? Is it possible to rent a car from Anaheim and leave it in San Diego?

Is there an international airport in San Diego?

Yes, I would def. rent a car and yes there is an International Airport in San Diego. If I'm not mistaken the car rental agency will charge extra for not dropping off at the same place you picked up. Check on that. Try Hertz, Almo, Enterprize just to name a few car rental agencies. An idea could be from Anaheim to San Diego by train, grab a cab to the airport and rent a car then when you are ready to leave SD simply return the car to the airport. I hope I was some help. Good luck in planning your trip, how exciting!!

i would definately recommend the LUX bus, we used it to get from Anaheim to Las Vegas. The seats were so comfy, they had drinks and snacks on board, we watched a movie and i wouldnt hesitate to use them again. i know that LUX bus also goes to San Diego, you could always rent a car once you are in san diego .....

How long is the Lux bus ride? We rented cars previously and love the freedom and it is an easy drive to and from Vegas, IMHO.

If you decide to book a car, your best bet is to use UK or international websites as these cover the insurance. The cost for non-Americans to book cars in the US can cost $30US per day just for the insurance which locals don't pay because it is covered in their regular car insurance.

we got picked up from the carousel inn at around 8am, we then picked up people from others hotels then went to the depot to exchange vouchers, (some people had to pay - depending on how they booked etc). We left anaheim around 8.45am. We got to vegas around 1.15 but we had stopped at Barstow for lunch. so in total around 5 hours but also depends where you get picked up from/dropped off.

I would just book a short flight to Las Vegas. Depending on the prices it can be cheaper then public transportation. I have done Vegas as a day trip by plane so it can be done if your limited on time. It's only a 1 hour flight.

I really like Amtrak from San Diego to Anaheim as well. Beautiful view of the Ocean most of the route.

Wouldnt know if any of this is really the best ways but ehre is what we plan to do on our trip in september.
As we will have a hire car while in Anaheim, we plan to drive to Vegas drop the car of there thenw e will fly from there into San Diego and lastly get the Amtrak upto Hollywood after our stay there :)
