Best way to get to Animal Kingdom for Family 5K from POP?

So I am not an early bird, the thought of being at Animal Kingdom by 6:15 isn't exciting me! I have also read that it can take up to an hour to get there with the resort transportation? I think POP is near AK. Do I really need to be out of my room by 5:15 in order to get there in time?

Would it be faster to drive?

Not even sure if transportation is open that early?

What is everyone planning on doing?

My hats off to the marathon runners, this is my first run and it's a big deal for me just to do 3.2 miles!! I was always a competitive swimmer, but not a runner!

Thanks.

First marathon weekend will have it's own transportation. Look for commercial style buses like Cruise line buses, etc. They will have a card in the window stating where they are headed. By far this is the most trouble free way to go. From PCR it's no more than a 15 minute ride after they depart the resort.

Yes you may drive but it will not be any faster. Also don't plan on sleeping in thinking driving is faster. It's just about the same, except you will be directed to the parking lot, not dropped off near the start/finish.

I have always taken the bus to the 5k in the past. It's just part of the weekend for us.

Finally, a little nitpicky technical correction that the engineer in me can't help but make. 3.1 miles sorry

I found this in the race info:

"Transportation: There will be bus transportation provided for this event if you are staying at one of the Walt Disney World® Resorts. Transportation will run from 5:30 am-6 am prior to the race and then continue until 10 am after the race. Please note you will be dropped off at the Disney Resort bus stop prior to the race, but the pick up location for your resort return will be in the Giraffe Lot directly across from the start/finish line area. We ask that everyone please arrive at Disney’s Animal Kingdom ® by 6:15 am."

It sounds like if you are going to rely on Disney to get there, the latest bus you could take would be around 6am.

Hi, Cindy and :welcome: ..You, too, Charles!! I'm hopefully doing the 5K also, AND staying at POP! If this is your first event, you'll want to be there early! It's a whole different atmosphere than just about any other race. Besides, there will be other WISHers to say, "Hi!" to and compare notes. :goodvibes Anne

I'm super excited too! As a former swimmer too, I'm not a huge fan of running. We just signed up today since we will be there anyway and only have done one race before! Hopefully we'll make it to the end! Guess I should get my butt in gear! Good Luck!:)
