We are considering a cruise for spring break or early June this year. While I would like to do a Disney cruise someday, we've never cruised and would like to try something cheaper for a first cruise. Are there any websites that offer good deals on cruises?

Prices during spring break and summer are going to be high. If cost is a consideration, like Disney you have to go during the off period. I like cruise.com to compare prices but there are lots of them out there. If you book an early saver rate with Carnival and then the price drops you will get a credit. Thats really the cheapest you will probably get. Good luck!

One of the best thing you can do is establish a relationship with a travel agent to keep a watch on cruise pricing for your travel dates!

I would research different cruiselines and find one that has a price point that you are comfortable with and amenties/activities that you need. After that, just watch the prices like crazy. They can change every day. Disney has a kids sail free to Alaska for close to those dates. You are looking at a generally more expensive time of year. Although, we found a kids sail free offer on the Wonder that was available during our kids spring break. We had to book last year to get it though. That offer sold out for our dates in 2 days. So, if you are not looking closely, great offers can come up and you'll miss them. With Disney, it's cheaper the further out you go. With Carnival, if you book at least 6 months away for a 7 night cruise, they have an early saver rate that is rediculously cheap. We've never sailed with Carnival but are trying them later this year because of a crazy cheap deal we got. $383 per person for a 7 night eastern caribbean cruise on their newest ship (which is also called the Dream).

If you are looking for more of a last minute get away, look at places like cruise.com that sell cruises by almost all major lines. Lots of cruiselines will discount last minute cruises if all the cabins are not full. Unfortunately for your dates, that is unlikely to occur.

Some of the best deals I have seen have been through Delta's website. Under Planning tools, click on Skymiles cruises. Last time we looked for a cruise, their prices were cheaper than the actual cruise lines in some cases plus they usually have skymiles for frequent flyer members as a bonus.

Also most cruise lines have a specials page on their website. I've seen some phenomenal deals through those. Sometimes you have to be flexible about where you want to go or where you sail from to get the best prices.

And like many websites, cruise line websites frequently have email notifications available. I got one from one cruise line last week about a last minute deal out of Jacksonville (Carnival, I think) for less than $300 per person for 5 nights.

From one location to another, the actual price for the same cruise will not change. No one is allowed to offer "discount" prices for a cruise that are lower than the price the cruiseline is selling the same trip for. TAs can however, offer incentives like OBC etc that make using them more attractive. Your best bet is to figure out where you want to go and when, then search the individual lines' websites to see what they have to offer. Or take the info to a TA and let them search for you.

I have been on Carnival, Disney and Royal Carribean. I prefer Disney but not enough to justify the extra expense, so we usually go with RCCL. A lot of it depends on who's going. Carnival is not as small kid friendly as I would like (good party atmosphere, but not great with toddlers) and while I know it varies from ship to ship and itinerary to itinerary, I wouldn't do Carnival again. We like RCCL for their Freedom class ships (GREAT pools for smaller kids) their kids club is good and their itinerary (on these ships) is the same boring itinerary as the Disney ships for a much lower price. I always book my own cruises because I am a control freak and can't bear to see that the price has gone down and then have to wait for my TA to get back to me to secure the new cheaper price. So I forfeit any OBC that a TA might offer in exchange for being in control of my own reservation.

Those are the WORST times to try to find a good deal for cruises. However, that being said - you can still find sailings that won't break the bank but if you can do a fall cruise - Sept has AWESOME prices (yes hurricane season but we have been fortunate to miss them and the weather in carribean is great that month). I agree with the pp about checking out vacations to go website to checkout what rates are going on several different lines at the same time. Using them I found a deal within my price range. My family just booked one onboard the Norwegian Sun for $499 per person for a 7 day that hits 2 stops we have never visited before for April 2 (our Spring Break week). It sails out of Canaveral and is an older ship, but I read it is in dry dock getting a face lift. I looked at some of the newer ships on Norwegian, RC, and Carnival and the same week was looking at costing 200-300 more per person - out of my budget. Best wishes with your search.

We have cruised about 5 times in the past few years. We always go in the summer when kids are out of school, so more $$$. But here are a few suggestions.

1. Carnival has been the cheapest for us. We have done a few cruises on RCCL that weren't too expensive. But Carnival has been the cheapest. And we like Carnival as much as RCCL. Disney was 2 times as much as either Carnival or RCCL, so we have never done that line.

2. Avoid the big new ships like Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, etc. Those are a lot more expensive!!! I would love to do Oasis, but can't justify the extra cost.

3. If you sail out of alternative ports (outside of Port Canaveral, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale) and on the older ships, you get a better price. We find that they keep these ships clean and freshened up. So its never been a problem for us on the older ships.

4. You don't say how many people you have in your group? If you can put 4 in a room as opposed to 2 in 2 rooms, that will be cheaper. You usually get a 3rd and 4th person discount. Although it will be a little tight in the room. There are ways to work around that (like have a couple people use the bathrooms/showers in the gym to get ready). But if the price is only a little bit more for 2 rooms, you might want to pay the little bit extra. You can get connecting rooms or adjoining rooms. But those tend to sell out kind of quickly. It depends on the age of your kids. We did connecting the first couple times. But then we did adjoining when they were a little older and I felt more comfortable.

5. Carnival's Early Saver program offers the cheapest rates. And as a previous person mentioned, you can get OBC or price reduction if the rates go down. BUT, there are restrictions that you need to be aware of. First, any changes will cost $50 per person. Plus, the deposit is NONREFUNDABLE. You can move it to another cruise to be used within 2 years, but you won't get it back if you don't cruise with carnival in 2 years. So this is a great option as long as you don't think you will need to make changes or cancel.

6. Itinerary is important because excursions can be expensive. The cheapest excursions will be the sitting by the beach type of excursion. So if you are ok with that type of excursion, pick ports that are beach oriented. The eastern caribbean itineraries are good for that. The
western itineraries seem to be a little more action oriented. Although you can find beaches usually at everything.

7. I might recommend a 4 night/5 day cruise to start with. That will be reasonable in cost. Although you might be able to get a 7 night cruise for not much more if you pick the right ship/line.

We went on the Carnival Legend out of Tampa this past summer and it was our best cruise ever!

Early June is cheaper than late June or spring break. Go to the cruiseline websites first to get an idea of pricing and itineraries, then submit your criteria to cruisecompete.com to get offers. Also check out cruisecritic.com for any answers to your questions.

Their policy (Carnival's) above is why we will not sail with them. We are cruising with friends who really wanted Carnival (that is their cruise line they always cruise on). We always sail Celebrity (well, occasionally RCI) and there was no way we would cruise Carnival and end up with a credit that we would never use in the event we had to cancel.

Also, with all of my cruise research, I didn't find Carnival to be all that cheap. We always get a balcony, maybe that is why?

You are not required to book Early Saver...its only an option.

You always have the option to book a regular fare with a refundable deposit and fewer restrictions on changing. Even with a regular booked fare you can take advantage of price drops up until final payment is made.

We don't always book early saver. Its an option, but not required. I have a local autism group that I'm taking in October and we booked past guest and military rates so that we could cancel in the event something comes up.

My 7-yo has been on 10 Carnival cruises, 1 Royal Caribbean, and 1 HAL. To the OP, being in Atlanta I would recommend you start with looking out of Jacksonville, FL as I'm guessing its driving distance for you and that alone will save you a ton of money.

I have done a lot of cruise research and I have never seen a case where a Celebrity cruise is cheaper than a Carnival cruise for similar ship (age, etc.), itinerary or cabin type. I'm not saying its not possible, but I have never seen it.

Yes, that is true. But the regular fare was even more than RCI with smaller cabins. My friends decided to try RCI.

Or try out of Tampa Carnival has 2 ships there & Hal & NCL are going to have ships there soon. if not already.

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

I realize I am lucky to be within driving distance of at least 4 ports, and that will save me money.

I have several friends who have sailed on Carnival and others who prefer Royal Caribbean. It is good to know that cruise prices are pretty much standard so that I don't have to go from website to website looking for deals.

Family of 6, 4 kids from 9-16. What cruise would be most affordable, is there a cabin that would sleep all of us or is adjoining best?
Thanks,
Terra

We did a Disney cruise in 2006. We really enjoyed ourselves, the service was impeccable, fun stuff to do for all ages and we really never saw any big meltdowns with the little kids. Other than running into characters you would never really know it was Disney!

Then we did RCCL and had a great time. We had another Disney cruise booked but found a 9 night for $1k less than the 7 night with Disney!

Last year we went on Carnival and have found our niche! There was a ton to do, very inexpensive and service was great. We even thought the food was better than RCCL. The only thing we liked better on Disney was the rotating dining. Not enough to pay so much more for it though.

The further out you book you'll find what you want for a good price. I don't like taking a chance on booking last minute if I see a cruise that I want to try. I always try to make sure that I'm happy with the price I book with so that if there aren't any price drops it doesn't make a difference.

I did a lot of rambling but I hope it helps.
