After reading all the trip reports and forum posts on here we went ahead and booked our first ever cruise for 21st August 2017 on the Dream room 9086 for 4 nights. I am sure that we will all have a wonderful time and want to rebook a longer cruise for the following year.

Is it advised to rebook on the ship to get the 10% discount or book yourself at another date?
And when do the cruises get released online as once we start to get the feel of cruising I am sure certain rooms would be nice to try and book

A very excited family who can't wait to try cruising with Disney though it does mean less days in WDW.

You next cruises is soon, if it was further away I would say, book now, then check again onboard. As if the prices go up on your cruise by 10% by then, - possible on popular cruises, your benefit on board has gone.

Yours is soon, so it's up to you.

Do assign a DCL Travel Agent for best on board discounts, TAs help and support you, and give you more control, if say things go wrong.

Placeholder / On board booking.

I know many here are seasoned cruisers, but on board booking has changed, and we have many new cruisers. We know booking a Disney cruise is expensive, and you may well get hooked. So how to secure the best price.

If you re book on the cruise you get discounts, these are 10% of your next cruise of three days or longer, this is 10% off the cruise fare, not off of port taxes and add ins like transfers, insurance, or flights. You get a shipboard credit of between $ 100/200 depending on the length on the new cruise, if over seven nights it's $200.

Some dates are not available these are peak times like Christmas Easter special new cruises. These are known as blackout dates.

Concierge is excluded on the 10% off cruise fare. You have to take the cruise within 24 months from booking. Our cruise is quite early, so, if re booking onboard and you want summer 2017, do it as late as possible in this 12 night cruise to get the best dates possible.

Process.

Now - you can go and queue up at the re booking desk on the ship, deck 4 above the atrium area, but it has long queues, and at the end of the cruise it gets longer, the best way to enjoy 100% of your cruise is to fill out a quote form drop it in, you get the quote overnight, in your room, read it, confirm and send it back, and it's charged to your stateroom credit card hard at embarkation. You can nominate your standard USA Travel agency at this time do you get their on board credits as well as DCLs. Note if you do not do that then they will not get full commission, if it's transferred later, within thirty days and on board credits will be lower.

Deposits are 10% for on board booking, on cruises released , over seven nights, and 20% of total cost on cruises six or less days. Deposits are refundable up to paid in full date, bar concierge, which is transferable but nit refundable.

If the cruise has not been released you book a placeholder of $250 per stateroom. IE also if you do not know when you will cruise but cruises maybe released book a placeholder. Placeholders are refundable.

You can book up to two staterooms on one future cruise on the on board booking terms.

So in summary.

If you even just " think" you may cruise again within two years, do book at lease a placeholder, the perks are great.
Do this by dropping a quote request in in the box at the on board booking agent, unless they are free, as DCL says, in the unlikely event their free! Dropping it off takes seconds and you get the quote back later. Nominate your travel agent, they have lists of the main agencies. TAs can handle placeholders and booking for you when new cruises come out, saving phone calls, and you of course would have to pay an extra deposit up to the 10% or 20% required on booking a new cruise.

Release dates.

Well all the posters who have posted in 2016 here, we're wrong on their " inside" information, there were posts it's January, it's February, it's March, it was April for summer 17. I suggest sign up with a good DCL TA who will tell you, and also sign up for DCL Email updates and DCL Facebook.

Since your first cruise is not until August 2017 and you want to book for the following year, I would not wait until you are on the cruise to book the second cruise. The 2018 cruises will all be out before you cruise in 2017. Your best bet is to book on opening day for the 2018 cruise and then when you are on your first cruise go to the future cruise desk and check to see if it would be beneficial to cancel and rebook. If the cruise price has already gone up more than the 10% discount + OBC then you already have the best deal. If it hasn't, you can cancel and rebook.
