I want to buy a point and shoot waterproof camera, I already have an sd1000 with waterproof case, but its really bulky. I was looking at the canon d10, any other suggestions?

Try posting on the photo board here on the DIS. They should be able to help you out.

The people who handle returns at COSTCO told me cameras that claim to be waterproof to 10-12 feet aren't really waterproof. They're OK if they get wet in the pool area but aren't really good underwater. A lot of returns.

If you're really going to use it for snorkeling you want a camera rated for at least 30 feet.

We have a D10. I love it. We use it for snorkeling so it hasn't been very very deep, but the kids like to dive down as far as they can to take pictures and it's held up really well :)

The main thing to remember it to make sure you rinse it, or submerge it, in regular water after it's been in salt water.

A New York Times personal tech columnist did a review of several model a year ago. You can find the review here. His video podcast of the review is pretty funny too.

I have an older Olympus water & shock proof model. We got it after our nice Sony point and shoot was knocked out of my wife's hand and on to the ground by our baby, ruining the lens. Given our lifestyle (theme parks, beaches, and kids) I'll only consider water and shockproof models for the foreseeable future.

I've had my eye on the D10, too. I have heard great things about it on the ScubaBoards.

I can tell you we had no luck whatsoever with the Fuji XP20. Every time we put it in the water, it simply shut off! Bad Fuji, Bad Fuji! :lmao:

We love the Olympus Stylus Tough. We had it for a few years and DH took it out on deployments and training now he is a diver and took the camera further that he was supposed to and he still got great pictures. About a year after that the seal broke but we knew it was our fault so no big deal the camera was 3 year old by then.

where is the photo board

On the DIS under "Just for Fun" - called the Photography board.

I've been researching waterproof cameras for a while- I am asking DF for one for my birthday because we'll be going on our honeymoon to Hawaii in September. The Canon D10 looks the best in terms of picture quality and reliability. There are a few that are smaller or have a wider picture range, but for the quality I think the D10 is the best.

I have an Olympus Stylus Tough. I have never had a problem with it, it is about 4 years old. I got my sone a Pentax W80 and it takes INCREDIBLE pics. It does great in water, under water, regular pics, and video. I highly recommend it.

Not necessarily. My Pentax Optio and Olympus Stylus waterproof cameras have survived snorkeling in Aruba and Castaway Cay. You just have to make sure you rinse them in them in tap water to remove the salt from the salt water. That is what does damage to them. Both take great pictures both above and underwater.

I have the D10 - It gets plenty of usage in the ocean and pools - works great and gets pretty good photos. I have never tried any of the other brands.

I bought the Kodak Playsport just before our trip last Sept. and love it. It was about $119 at Sam's. It's really an underwater video camera that takes photos as well. The quality is really good (just remember to take it off "water" setting when you are shooting out of water). Now I use it to video DD11 playing softball games-works great in daytime and at night under the lights.

I LOVE my Cannon powershot D10 !!!! Last spring we went on the Magic's TransAtlantic cruise and I was looking for a new underwater camera in digital media ( I also had an Elph but it used Advantix film ). I am CERTAIN that I first learned about the D10 on the Disboards- sorry I don't have the link. I believe it was a discussion I found on the DCL boards. The OP on that thread posted fabulous pictures- all taken with the D10. I was sold once I realized that the D10 also is able to film video underwater! Although my primary purpose of purchasing the camera was for water use, I have discovered that it takes beautiful photos - better than any of my other cameras!!!It has been the BEST camera purchase I have EVER made ( and I have had LOTS of cameras through the years ) !!!

I will try to track down the original thread that helped me discover the D10.

I have an Olympus Stylus Tough SW 790 that I bought in October 2008 and another Olypmus Stylus Tough SW 810 from April 2010. We still use both of them, we actually got the second one because the kids kept taking my older one in the pool under water to take pictures and I still wanted something water proof. The pictures are fantastic and can be blown up to 16 x 20 or larger (that's just what I've printed so far) and I wish I would have waited on the second one because they are now cheaper and using SD cards instead of XD. They focus and take excellent pictures even in the dark - we've gotten some hilarious shots of family members screaming on space mountain! They are extremely durable! My older camera has actually been launched across a parking lot (four year old boys - geez!) and other than some major road rash on the casing the camera shows no signs of this. I feel completely comfortable letting the kids use these cameras and I could care less if they drop it, or even throw it in a tantrum for that matter. I think the only thing it would not recover from is getting run over : ). These cameras also offer casing if you are going deeper than 10 feet and it doesn't seem to be as bulky as some of them are. My husband and I have a photography business and I can tell you I almost had a heart attack when our youngest decided to carry my husband's new $5k camera and $2k lens into the bedroom to us one morning - we told him hands off the little ones are for him.

We also have an Olympus (I'll have to check the number when I'm home). We bought it for a trip a few years ago and we really like it.

I was a bit hesitant to take it into the pool the first time since it had about a week's worth of our vacation pictures on it at that point, but it didn't hurt it at all.

It was also great to have for our trip during the crazy record rains two years ago in May-- (poured non-stop all 12 days we were there :sad2:). If I hadn't had that camera I don't think I would have taken any pictures outside.
