Dh and I are pooling our Christmas gift cards (from our parents) and getting a new video camera for our trip at the end of the month. We've never had a digital video camera before-- we want something that will be very easy to share and watch and I do not anticipate doing a lot of editing, but I might like to be able to capture and print stills.

Recommendations?

I brought my flip which was great, small, took great video! :)

But I also have nothing to compare it to. But I've always been happy with it.

We have a DSLR that takes HD video, our phones that take HD video, and an old camcorder (that doesn't take HD ;) ) and I still reach for the HD flip every time. We have an older flip that is non-HD and loved it so much that we upgraded.

I too am one with several still & vid cameras from your high end DSLR to your every day P&S, but one of my fav "go to's" for any occasion is my Panasonic Lumix ZS3. They just came out with the ZS7 (latest version) which is a FAB price on Amazon...

What I love is that its a regular P&S camera with the addition of HD vid so I don't need to bring multiple cameras for individual purposes. The vid it takes is wonderful, simple to operate, and writes very fast to the SD cards. As for sharing we upload our straight to youtube right off the SD cards, nice and easy. :thumbsup2

If you use the Flip, then you must bring your laptop if you shoot a lot.

Nobody in town can change the memory or burn a DVD for you to let you shoot more after it fills up.

The camcorder should have an HDMI or component or VGA output. A plain video output (yellow jack) will degrade the video considerably when you do an upload.

Hmmm...this is good to know. What if you upload your HD video straight from your SD card? Does that degrade the video? My HD stuff looks pretty good to me....

I'm thinking about getting the Playsport. I would love to be able to have a small camera and to be able to shoot underwater.

I have the Kodak PlaySport and love it. It records to a SD Card (well a HD one but its not called that) Records in 1080 or 720 you can set it. We got an 8 GB and it will record 2 hours. If you have a computer that has a SD slot you can just pop it in and it automatically imports. I love that it is waterproof up to 10 ft and its pretty durable that is a major plus for me with a baby.
