My husband and I are teachers and are currently looking into DVC. We have made two offers for resales at BWV and have been beaten both times. I am also thinking about WLV, but just not sure. I have seen some discussion here over use year, and I'm not quite sure which one would be best for us. I understand that you do not get to choose, but when you buy is the deciding factor(and that the use year is already set if we go with a resale). I am willing to be patient to wait for the right one.

Our school calendar gives us breaks in March, April, June, July, November, and December. These would probably be the times we would go, with more times in early June, November, and December.
What are ya'll's(I'm from Kentucky) opinions?

Thanks!

Use year is irrelevant to when you can go, which is any time of year, or when you can call to make a ressie, up to 11 months in advance at home resort 7 at others. I would not be concerned as to when your use year is.

I'm a little concerned about our use year, it is Sept. Since all of our family are educators, we also will be doing a lot in the summer months. If I undersand correctly, I think the only time it might make a difference is if we are using borrowed or banked points that would have to be used before Sept. If we would have to cancel for some reason or another, we would be subject to lose these points if we could not use them by Sept. Am I thinking correctly? Hopefully we would not have to ever cancel!

Its not simply using banked or borrowed points, it is any points. The only concern is with a cancellation. No matter what the points used are, even if they are current use year points, you caould have a problem.

You find out in June that you have to cancel your August vacation, since your use year is September, you are already WAY past the banking deadline.

This will never come into play unless you have to cancel a vacation.

In my nine years, use year has never come into play.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", Karl Marx, pretty sick, huh?

The other posters are right--use year really only is a concern when/if you have to cancel a reservation. I've seen advice on this board before--and it makes sense to me--to pick a use year just before you will usually vacation. We have four teachers in our family too so our vacations are mainly in the summer. Our use year is June. If we have to cancel a July or August vacation, we still have time to make a new reservation before those points expire the following May 31st or to bank the points.

Absolutely the only time it comes into play is for cancellations.
If you want to be safe try and gat a use year that starts one or two months before you plan to vacation most. Example - we vacation most in May and my use year is April. If i have to cancel a May trip I have plenty of time to book another or bank the points.

In your situation September or October would probably best.
