Either beginning of September (around Labor Day)
Or
Beginning of October (around Columbus Day)

Which would you suggest & why?

I think right after Labor Day (kids are back in school) would be less crowded, though it always seems to be crowded anymore.

The best time to come is when it fits into your schedule. There really isn't a low crowd time anymore and even heavy crowds aren't a vacation ruining situation unless you allow it to be.

Now with your specific dates, I would come october. it'll still be hot, humid and daily rain but not as bad as early september and there is a chance for cooler evenings and not soul sucking days. We also really enjoy MNSSHP and halloween and there have been years that hasn't been happening early in september so when given the choice, we'd go with when we know it will be happening.

We have been both the very beginning of September and the first week of October. Both were hot, humid and had daily rainstorms. But there was a lot more to do in October. The Halloween stuff was up, we went to MNSSHP and to Food and Wine. But it was more crowded in October than in September.

October would get my vote. I love the Halloween stuff, plus not so much rain and humidity.

Hmmm...for crowd level, early September. I don't think the temp varies hardly at all between early Sept./early Oct. In 2017 Epcot's Food & Wine is starting in August, dunno how much that will affect the crowds in early September. Usually early Sept. is good because a huge majority of U.S. students are back in school at that time, and it's too early to miss school at that point.

Absolutely agree with @Micca .

If by "best time to visit" you mean when is it least crowded, then it's no contest. Columbus Day has gotten crazy crowded in recent years. The week immediately following Labor Day is the one time of year that remains predictably low crowd. That is because so many schools are just starting and while people will take kids out for a Disney trip, most won't do so in the first couple weeks of the year.

If by best you mean crowd levels then early September. And next year you will be able to enjoy F&W in early September. Which will make the weekends busy at Epcot.

On average it will be a few degrees cooler in October but as others have noted it will still be hot. And crowded around the holiday.

For us northerners who hate the heat, we'd take those few degrees and deal with the crowds.

For touring parks alone, probably early September. Crowds are lower. There is a slightly higher risk of hurricanes.

For other opportunities, October. Food and Wine will be going on. Crowds will be noticeably heavier.

You will get both F&W and Halloween decor/MNSSHP during both timeframes. It will be less crowded beginning of September. But we absolutely noticed the difference in temperature between Labour day and Columbus Day. Maybe because it gets dark out earlier in October it just feels cooler. Touring in October temperature wise was easier.

End of August. Low crowd levels.
Who cares about the heat.. It's FL and you're in Disney

Think I'm swaying towards end of August/beginning of September

And yes best to me= lower crowds
Heat would follow
If the rain comes hard and then passes like it did for us in July/Aug I can deal with that.

Not so keen on severe weather conditions though-don't want to miss out on valuable park time....
