I have been using a spray stainless steel cleaner on my fridge, stove and dishwasher that I picked up at a local home improvement store. I guess it is not a good one because it doesn't get the hard water drips off and is making a black layer of oxidation(?) on the surface of my appliances. So what brand works best? It needs to be something that takes off the water marks and fingerprints from the kids.

Good old (Lemon) Pledge! Yup, the kind you dust with. I read that here on the Dis once and it's true. It could be my favorite tip ever! It works so quick and easy. I use it with a microfiber cloth, but any rag will do. Hope you like it too!

I use the all purpose cleaning towelettes.
My refrigerator doesn't show finger prints etc., but my new washer and dryer does.
I hate, hate, hate Stainless Steel.

I was using an expensive "stainless steel" specific cleaner & cloth - then I found Windex Multi Purpose Antibacterial -in the yellow bottle - NOT the vinegar variety in the white/blue bottle. It works great on my stainless steel AND granite..and everything else. I couldn't find it at my local grocery store though, I found it at Lowe's. I get 2-3 bottles every time I go!

I like it because it works on all surfaces from kitchen to bath so I just need one product.

I like Method brand and I use a microfiber cloth that is specifically for stainless steel. Sometimes I just use the cloth with a little water and it does the trick. Other times I need the cleaner.

If you want to get the black off, try using Bar Keepers Friend. Every time I use it on a new stainless piece ( I mean one that hasn't been cleaned by BKF), the sponge turns black. I don't use it every time for cleaning, but it does good for that deep down gritty dirt that surface cleaners won't get to. They sell it in a powder and liquid form. Although I did have to go to Lowes to finally get some, didn't have any luck at few other stores (Target, walmart's grocery store, walgreens).

Bar Keepers Friend is great for pots and pans, not so sure I would use it on my refer, dishwasher or compactor! I love the sprayway glass cleaner in a blue aerosol can (3 pack at Costco for 7.99). It is my go to cleaner for all of my ss appliances, granite counters and windows too. It is ammonia free.

I have to say I hate SS appliances too! I have had them in the last 3 houses and they are "In"! I clean my refer door handles at least 6X a day! If you ever want to sell your house they are a must... however I hate cleaning them!

Of course I hate cleaning in general, but like my house clean so must do it!!

WD40 believe it or not is the best thing I have found for my stainless steel refridgerator. Shines it really nice and even buffs out scratches.

I always use stainless steel cleaner wipes. But I may have to try some of these. never thought about WD40, but I know it cleans my stuff in the garage great. I have WD40 soft towel wipes that I use to clean grease off my hands. I need to try these on fridge.

You can use mineral oil (found by the laxatives) to make your SS look great! Go with the "grain" of the SS.

I have a house cleaning business and one of my clients told me about it. It's cheap and works great!

I use warm water with a squirt of Dawn. Then rinse with ater only and buff to dry. I find that everything else leaves a film. Good old soap and water.

When we got our SS fridge, the appliance store recommended baby oil.

Works great - cheap too!

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas. Some I have already tried, but now I have lots of new things to try too:thumbsup2

Has anyone used CLR Stainless Steel cleaner? I heard that it will take the water marks off pretty easy but I haven't been able to find it in my local stores. All purpose CLR is what I finally used to get what was already there off. The bottle said it is good for stainless, but I am a little hesitant to use it repeatedly.

If you have had to remove marks on stainless i would look at quickleen-s from steelcleaner.com but if you are after a polish i would recommend an industrial polish like the ultimate40 stainless steel cleaner

Simple Green. I cannot tell you how much stainless steel I cleaner prior to our having SS appliances but all of those hours spent cleaning and polishing British motorcycle rims and fenders left me well prepared. Simple Green takes fingerprints and drips right off with little to no rubbing necessary. Then I Pledge the flat surfaces. Minimal Effort, minimal time and easy. Plus Simple Green is a great all purpose cleaner to have on hand. We keep a bottle in the kitchen and a bottle in the garage :rotfl:.

I actually love my SS appliance because they're soo easy to keep clean as opposed to a pair of Akront rims :lmao:.

The appliance repair guy that my DH uses for his jobs (DH remodels kitchens) told me to use WD40, he says that's what they use in the warehouse on all the stainless steel appliances.

I just use a microfiber cloth. I didn't think it was going to work, but it gets all of the kid's fingerprints off. My mom gave me one that is like a mitt and it is silver - it was marketed specially as a stainless steel cleaning cloth. I also went to K-Mart and bought a 2 pack of plain microfiber cloths from the auto department that work just as well. I wet one, wipe the fridge (stove/toaster/mixer bowl/dishwasher..) then use the dry one to dry them off.

They also work wonders on windows - no cleaner, just water and the windows look great!
