You know they don't need Xbox live to play the games, right? That is only for playing with other players through the internet. They can play together or with anyone in the house without the membership. Also, most consoles come with a free 1 month membership card, so they can try it out before you buy.

Thanks I didn't know that they might get a trial membership. My sons friends play online with each other and my nephew lives in another county and they want to play each other.
You don't need the Gold membership in the strictest sense, but it does limit the Xbox pretty severely to go without. It isn't just for online gaming but also any other web apps like Netflix, Facebook, and streaming radio as well.
Amazon does usually seem to be the cheapest place for the card. I've also seen it on sale from time to time at Meijer and I think once or twice at Target, always right around $40. Alternatively, if you're just getting started with the XBox Best Buy has a bundle that is a full price ($59.99) year of XBox Live Gold but comes with a "free" USB mini-keyboard, headset with microphone for gaming, and 400 points for the XBox Live store.

If you know they want it, I would get the 12 month while it's on sale like that. It is usually 59.99. Just know that each boy may want his own, so they can have separate accounts.
Although you don't need xbox live to play xbox your boys will thank you for it. We have two xbox 360 in our house 1 in the family room with the kinect and 1 in my sons bedroom. I got 2 xbox live 1 year memberships from amazon for 35.99 prior to this I purchased 1 and three month subscriptions from xboxlive for only $1 these were promotions for xbox live members. There are a lot of perks for being an xbox live gold member. In my house we have family game night we play with each other and with people across the country, we watch movies via netflix, facebook, youtube and so many other things and all of these things require a gold membership.
One more bit of info your boys will definitely want xbox live points. These points are used to buy things such as clothes for their avatar, depending on the type of game they are playing they may have to purchase game add ons, they can purchase movies or music. The prices of the points range from 19.99 to 49.99 and they rarely go on sale.
