Was wondering were everyone thinks is the best price and place to buy a kindle? Are there any black Friday deals on it somewhere? Thanks!

The only deal I've heard of is the Gold Box deal tomorrow on Amazon.com - $89.99 for the Kindle 2 (previous generation).

The $139 Kindle 3s are flying off the shelves everywhere. I don't expect to see anybody discount them, they can't even keep them in stock. If that is what you want I'd just go ahead and order it now. Amazon has a return policy thru Jan 31st so if you find a deal later you can return the one you have.

My mother in law wants to know if library books can be downloaded to the kindle? I don't know what she is talking about but can they do that?

No, but the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Sony Ereader can. If she mostly wants library books, get her the Nook (although I think the Kindle is a better product overall!)

My brother found an article somewhere, that said library books would be able to be used on a Kindle in the fairly new future. I don't remember the details.

May I ask why you prefer the kindle? Trying to decided between a kindle, a nook, and an Ereader. Thanks!

ugh, i SO want the kindle, but will be trying to get one tomorrow along with millions of other people, i'm sure. the odds are NOT in my favor, but i'm going for it anyway!

That also depends on your library. I checked recently, and my library doesn't offer books for any of the various readers. :sad1:

While I can't answer for the PP as to her specific reasons I can note some of the reasons people prefer the Kindle vs the Nook.

- Until the recent software upgrade (just happened on Tuesday), the Kindle was faster than the Nook as far as page turns. It also had the ability to organize of the books that you purchased. The upgrade to the Nook software on Tuesday eliminated these issues.

- In addition, one reason that a lot of people prefer the Kindle over the Nook is that if the books are to be purchased, are overall they are a little bit cheaper for the Kindle - though there are deals to be had on the B&N books as well and many, many books are the same price.

- Another reason people prefer the Kindle vs Nook generally hinges on issues relative to the weight and feel of the device. As far as that is concerned only you can know which you'd prefer based on feel and handling.

Other things to be aware of:

- The Kindle only opens books that have been created or converted to run with their proprietary software. Some people state that you can convert library books to run on the Kindle but if you are not computer savvy this is NOT an easy process and not something I'd recommend and since not all libraries will want you stripping the DRM off their books you may get in trouble for doing so.

- Many, many libaries are offering e-books for free or almost free (for example, my uncle's library charges 99 cents if he wants to rent a recent best seller e-book - but they also do this for the hardcover recent best sellers). However; this is a new and up and coming option at libraries so check to make sure this is an option at your local library before buying a Nook or Sony e-reader just for this ability.

- For a good comparison of the features of e-book readers and to better help you decide which to buy check out this matrix: http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix

I like everything about the Kindle - the Amazon innovation and customer service, the Collections feature, the text to speech feature, the availability and price of ebooks on the Amazon site, the fact that I can buy a book and share it with both my daughters because we are all on the same account, the ability to read on my iPhone or iPad if I prefer - I just really like the Kindle and Amazon in general.

The only feature that would entice me to get a Nook is the ability to get books from the library - but I am not willing to read on someone else's schedule, so I don't find the library function useful. For me, the whole point of an ereader is convenience, and I'm willing to pay for it. I want the books I want when I want and for as long as I want, not needing to be returned when the due date comes up.

I am just a big fgan of the Kindle!!

You don't have to stick to your local library. I joined the one in the next county that has a nice ebook selection. I've heard the Philly library has an excellent selection and anyone can join for $15.

The screen on the kindle is much easier to read. It really feels like looking at ink on a page. There's no glare.
