Best place to see the fireworks from OUTSIDE the park?

Where would you go to see the fireworks if you weren't inside the park?

Is the space between DL and DCA a good spot?

Must be because I saw quite few people there on the 4th of July, you might have to be closer to the CA end as the railroad may block some of your view

Parking structure also has a good view.

We found the esplanade about 2/3 of the way back toward DCA to be very nice. The middle was ok also but the monorail starts to get in the way forward of that. One can usually walk right up there right at show time without much trouble. Many people sit too. The biggest thing one misses out there is that you don't see Tinkerbell flying all over the place and the music is just the regular esplanade music.
