I recently purchased a new mattress and found there is a lot you don't hear about when you buy a mattress. I recommend if there is a local small manufacturer you buy from them. Many of the foam mattresses on the market have so many chemicals in them and the fire retardants they spray on commercial mattresses also have additives that are carcinogenic. I went with a vispring mattress, because they use no chemicals in there treatment and have a lifetime warranty.

I don't think you have to spend a fortune but definitely spend the time asking questions. I also don't like buying mattresses from furniture stores unless you know the mattress is shipped to you from the vendor and not sitting in a musty storage facility. There are still some really great mom and pop shops that make quality mattresses around the country. I'd see if you can find one local to you. Find out whats in the mattress and avoid foam if you really read about foams you'll see they are loaded with chemicals. There is a chain that is not 100% natural but they are very honest and answer questions its called Saatva I found there sales staff very informed and prices reasonable. Unfortunately they didn't have what I was looking for but they have a good product.

We also recently bought a new mattress. I would absolutely shop local because of what we learned when shopping. Disregarding the whole foam chemical/accumulating dust & must/buy natural thing...things we learned when shopping:

• Pricing is all over the place and you can't comparison shop because no mattresses have the same name at two different shops (even if they might actually be the same mattress).
  
• No two plush mattresses or firm or extra firm mattresses are the same. And no two stores describe their levels of firmness or plushness the same.
  
• You have to lay on a lot of mattresses to find the one that's best for you. We tried out over 50 mattresses before we found one we liked and they were all plush mattresses.
  
• Flippable mattresses are almost but not quite a thing of the past. A flippable mattress will extend the life of the mattress.
  
• Don't let the Mattress Specialty stores fool you into thinking that a 5 year warranty is the best you can do. We purchased from a local furniture chain who carries their own line of mattresses. They offered a 10 year warranty on all of their mattresses and it was less money than the ones with 5 (this same store also carried name brand mattresses and they had 10 year warranties on some of the name brand mattresses as well).
  
• No matter your price range there is a mattress in your price range. We got ours including the box spring and taxes for less than $750 and we did not go with the lowest priced mattress.
  
• Check your current box spring. If it's solid and there are no cracks in the wood or tears in the fabric and it doesn't twist or sag, then you don't HAVE to replace it. And a good store will sell you just the mattress. You can save up to half the cost if you don't need to replace your box spring.

Needed to replace our sagging mattress rather quickly since DH was having back surgery. Didn't want another spring mattress, but the tempur pedics were out of our price range. We went with one purchased from www.BedinABox.com It was delivered right to the door, and was vacuum sealed. It was really something cutting the plastic cover and watching it expand to a 13 inch deep queen size mattress. We've had it over a year now, and we absolutely love it. No aching joints, and DH has no complaints. You can also see it on youtube.
