Wow. My family happens to like the pizza at Disney. I'm pretty sure all cs pizza is the same pre-frozen, stick it in the oven style- at least they all taste the same & look the same. My younger brother (11) actually LOVES all CS pizza in Disney! It's the first thing he gets when we check in to Pop.
But overall, we think all pizza in Disney is good.

I would never order a pizza in Disney World. But then, I have exacting standards. Even in Albany, where the pizza is not terrible, I prefer to make my own from scratch (a habit I picked up out of necessity while living in Buffalo). Truthfully, outside of the New York metropolitan area (my true home!), I've never eaten a pizza that wowed me (though Chicago, admittedly, has a different style that I also enjoy). Pizza is an art that hacks have turned into a commonplace combination of tasteless doughs, bitter sauces, pedantic cheeses and piles of toppings to actually give them some flavor (and most have the gaul to charge twice as much as a place like Lombardi's). I've decided on this principle.... when in Napoli, have a pizza, when in _X_, have what's good there (and it's a good bet it isn't the pizza). To me there's nothing worse than saving a few bucks for an awful meal!

It is the same in New York. The chains do have a foothold in the city, but almost all of the places are in midtown or other high-volume tourist areas. In most residential areas, the independent places are impregnable, and at least in New York, they tend to be less expensive. Curiously enough, the same goes for much of Long Island, which actually has some really fantastic places itself.
I sympathize completely with you, by the way, having gone to school in Virginia. But then, you are a lot closer to an amazing barbecue place than any of us in the northeast (Dinosaur being the notable exception, though it still isn't the same in my opinion). And I will admit to enduring a bit of wing withdrawal when I left Duff's behind me in Buffalo!
As an appendixed anecdote, I guided a "pizza freak" from Vancouver on his first trip to New York City, and he said it was a revelation, that he is now spoiled and doesn't know what he's going to do. This isn't just regional pride, as you can surely attest.
By the way, though, for those of you now inspired to do a pizza pilgrimage to New York or Chicago, first, it's worth it!, but second, get the skinny, there are a lot of knockoffs that are no good (the 18 manifestations of Ray's being the most famous example). Same goes for a lot of famous places in the city.... any local can tell you to go to Papaya King for a dog, not Papaya Dog! (Oh, and New Yorkers are friendlier than you've heard, particularly if you want to commune with them over the altar of pizza.)
As for Disney World, again, there are tons of choices, stick with those that are good! (Oh yeah, this is a Disney forum)

I too go offsite for my pizza-while-at-WDW needs. DW and I went to UNO at the Crossroads just northeast of DTD last December (and saw the shuttle launch from there). They had some pretty decent deep dish.

Actually I do remember a small Mom/Pop type pizza shop in Orlando that I went to as a child. We wen't EVERY trip, but stopped once we got the DDP. I don't remember the name, but I remember it was kind of rustic looking inside...there were wood booths...and lots of flowers outside. Anyone know what the name of this place is? (Sorry for the lacking description)
It was very very good pizza.

All you NY pizza fans need to make the trek up to New Haven CT and visit Sally's and Pepe's. This rivals the best (or may be the best IMHO) in America.
