Looking for info on this one, specifically the boats that are used for the whale watching and how many passengers they hold.

Thanks in advance for any info of this excursion!

I know this is an old thread but it was never answered and we are looking at this one for August. Anyone?

To clarify.... are you asking about "Best of Juneau" tour or "best tour for Juneau"?

I took a "Best of Juneau" tour from HAL a few years back. This is the closest DCL tour to it.

The deluxe tour has NO boat. Everything is done by bus. There is no whale watch, that time is consumed by the hatchery and Glacier Garden visit.

I took a photo safari whale watch with DCL the following year. They used a middle sized boat that can take about a dozen people.

We did one like science and whales, I don't remember but I can look for it. It was disney tour and it's supposed to be a kids tour. We only have 2 5 or 6 years old and and 3 15yo. Less than 15 persons in the boat a we learned a lot.

I was looking at that one, but we were thinking Best of Juneau would be nice because it includes food. I read some reviews of other tours with both the whales and the glacier that people were hungry because it was just too long of a tour to not have lunch included.

We did the 11am tour so we had a late breakfast and we got just before sail away. The reason we booked that excursion was because every report I read about other Disney whales tours was they have like 50 persons in the boat vs less than 15 on the tour we choose. But yes we were hungry by the time we got to the ship.

I have one like this one in the back of my mind if the private whale watching with Rum Rummers doesn't pan out. The one I'm looking at is the same, but doesn't include Mendenhall Glacier since we've already been there. I also liked the idea of getting food at the Orca Point Lodge so we aren't starving and miserable. The private whale watching tour with Rum Runners isn't long though - about 2 1/2 - 3 hours but I don't know what time we'd get picked up. If we don't get another family to split the private whale watching with us, I'll likely cancel with Rum Runners and do the DCL one with Orca Point Lodge so I'm wondering if we'll all end up there around the same time :) Decisions, decisions, decisions! Juneau is the only port we aren't definite on at the moment but at least we have two options.

Does Rum Runners have a Glacier add on option? Some other tours do have it, but it's a lot more than the DCL tour. Also, we looked at Harv and Marv, but unless we do a private tour, they won't take children which is sort of a bummer. I looked at some other tour companies, but they are the same as or more than the DCL tour which is sort of baffling me. I thought it was usually the other way around.

Yah, I read some of those too, but they were all older posts (2011-2012) and most of the recent reviews I can find (2014-2015) seem to indicate fewer people. I'm not sure if it's the tours that these people just happen to get depending on what's in port or if DCL realized that people weren't happy with so many people and asked the tour operator to operator at a lower capacity.

So I'm looking at the cruise port schedule for the day we're in Juneau and it looks like the Wonder docks at 6 AM. (Disney's schedule says 6:45, but I assume that's what time they start allows folks off) and there are two other ships listed: Volendam and Grand Princess listed as 13:00 and 13:30 respectively which seems really late. Do they really not get into port until 1 PM? That seems really odd to me.

Well, if that's the case and we do a morning departure, the only people on the boat would be people already visiting Juneau and DCL people so it shouldn't be insane, right?

They do yes. I just went back and pulled up their website and they mention you can add on Mendenhall before the whale watching or after (they'll pick up or drop off) but they'd need to know in advance. They also point out other options like taking the shuttle for $10 p/p to/from town as needed. I'm not sure what their exact pricing for that would be but the private whale watching for 6 people is $699 before tax (or cc fee I can't remember) and that's about $116 p/p which isn't bad at all and would be cheaper than DCL and a private boat with only 6 people.

Yes indeed there are ships that get there later. I remember that from our 2013 sailing and my friend sailed with NCL this past summer and I'm pretty sure they didn't get to Juneau until later in the morning as they "cruised by Tracy Arm" that morning on the way to Juneau. I agree it's nice to know we might have some of the boats to ourself but I don't know why but I was thinking some of the private excursions don't leave until after lunch and I wonder if that's why?

Yep the afternoon boats does an encore to Tracy Arm before arriving in Juneau. The Wonder spends a day going deep into the 31 mile fjord.... the afternoon boats pause for small boat excursion to meet up with the big boat later in the afternoon.

These afternoon boats likely do their glacier viewing in Glacier Bay.... something the Wonder skips (while charging you more... tsk).
