Best Mediterranean Itineary

We are doing the 12 night this summer and we love the itinerary. We start in Rome and end in Barcelona, so we get extra time to explore these two big cities. It ports in Greece at Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Chania, Sicily, Malta and Mallorca with 4 sea days to relax in between some of the ports. We were supposed to go to Turkey but they switched it to Chania due to the proximity to the tensions between Israel and Gaza in the area.
It's a great itinerary if your primary goal is to see Greece, but OP stated her son wants to see Italy.

OP also stated this, "I do think he would genuinely enjoy walking around any Italian or Greek coastal villages we ended up at." So I think recommending a cruise to Greece is totally appropriate, especially when it embarks in Rome. Maybe read a little more than just the original post...🤓

I think his happy medium would be being able to get off the ship and walk around the city for a bit wherever he was, but more importantly come back to his internet package and hand held video games at the end of the night
Then, in general, a Med cruise, especially one that focuses on Italy, isn't the right kind of cruise. Many of the ports are 60-90 minutes or more away from anything of any interest. Many of the ports are pretty dead in terms of activities, places to eat and things to see; some are quite industrial or very residential. Rome, for example, is a good two hours from Civitavecchia, especially during rush hour.

A Baltic cruise is more like what you describe. Very walkable from the ship, has lots to see and places to eat and doesn't require a lot of driving to get anywhere. A Greek Islands cruise might be more like that too, although it's still quite a walk from the port to the town unless you take the bus that the cruise line arranges (10 minutes, maybe). We could easily see the ship from the town but it was so hot and windy there was no way I was walking that distance totally out in the open with no cover or wind break.

We just book this same cruise! I’m excited to see that someone else on here is doing it. There’s no cruise meet page for it. Have you been to any of these ports before?

Yay!! We have been to Italy 25 years ago on a land trip, but we have never been to any of these ports before ports. The cruise meets on the DIS just aren’t what they used to be, they have all moved to Facebook and I refuse to join those.
