Best Means to get Cheaper Broadway (NYC) tickets?

Been a few years since I've been. Used to get half price for same day tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Sq. Just went there and many of the shows were now only 30% discount, and the discount was off the higher price tickets. Thinking there must be better ways to get cheaper tickets. Googled it but get hammer by resell sites....

Thoughts? Thinking Les Miserables, Chicago, or Wicked the weekend of Jan 31.

We are going Martin Luther King weekend . I used theatremania. I did get discounted tickets but not to the shows you mentioned.

I use Broadwaybox.com also, had good luck with them for seat selections.

The best discounts I have gotten are at the TKTS booth in Times Square. I've never personally seen tickets offered there for 50% off.

Telechargeoffers.com has an offer on Les Mis tickets with the code MIZWHERE.

Dont know if any of the times or dates would work for you.

I got a great deal for If/Then on theatremania.com
For less popular shows the lotteries are good- the day we went to Kinky Boots everyone there got in. I wouldn't count on that for something like Book of Mormon or Alladin.

Yeah, you definitely can't count on the lottery. :goodvibes I tried to do the lottery in September for Book of Mormon. There were about 300 people trying to get matinee tickets on a Wednesday, and they had 12 seats for the lottery.

I've had pretty good luck with the TKTS booth. In Aug/Sept we got tickets 3 times: 50% off for Heathers, and 40% off for both Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder and Jersey Boys.

I would suggest getting the TKTS app for your smartphone. They update it in realtime to show what tickets they are selling and the discount being offered. They also show historical data of what discounts have been offered recently. I don't think that Wicked is one of the shows that ever has tickets available for the TKTS booth.

I find good deals on the app Today's Tix. Got great seats to Bullets over Broadway last year for only $30. They do have Les Miz/Wicked every now and then, but it's for obscured vision/last row in Balcony- not worth it. Best to get good seats and pay the price if you can - they are both SO worth it.

If you are a member of the clergy, a union, in a public service field or something similar, try TDF.org and look at the membership requirements. You will need to join, but I believe an out of town membership is only $20 or so. The cost savings are considerable.

TKTS has a phone app that you can track regularly to get a sense of discounts and availability. For much of the year, tickets are 50 percent for all but the most popular shows. During a high tourism week such as Christmas and New Year's, the demand drives the prices up.

I agree with the other great suggestions, such as the Today's Tix app, Theatermania and lotteries. I use them all! Try www.seasonofsavings.com as well, which is targeted to residents of the Tri-State area (New York, Jersey and Connecticut).

And, even the most popular shows use algorithms to keep their audiences full, so you'll find less expensive tickets during weeknights and off-season for The Lion King, Aladdin, Book of Mormon, Wicked and Bradley Cooper's The Elephant Man.

And, if you are looking for a new show, definitely see Sting's The Last Ship. I've watched the production twice -- and it's fantastic!

Sorry for the second post, but in regards to the shows you mentioned:

1) Chicago ... I didn't even realize that's still running! However, when I found their site, they are offering $49 for weekend matinees. Check their site: http://chicagothemusical.com/ticket_info.php.
2) Les Mis ... It's my all-time favorite. Do know the new production has different staging -- no longer has the revolving floor! Discount code of seasonofsavings.com.
3) Wicked... This is a more challenging show to score discount tickets, but they are starting to lower their full-price tickets to keep the show in demand (i.e., sold out every performance).

End of January should yield lower prices than the holidays!

I highly recommend The Last Ship (listen to soundtrack samples), which is simply beautiful with fantastic music and performances and If/Then if you like contemporary, edgy shows and Idina Menzel! I'm seeing Honeymoon in Vegas tomorrow, so I can let you know afterwards :)

Enjoy your trip to the city!

Hey mjkacmom, we are also seeing the Last Ship tomorrow (Christmas gift from my husband). He also bought me the soundtrack and we have been listening to it all week. Looking forward to seeing this and maybe we will bump into each other.

Also, as far as discount tickets - many years ago they used to be 50% off at the TKS booth - but not always anymore. Last year we got tickets to Jersey Boys there and I think they were 40% off. January is usually a good time to go there for tickets.

How exciting! I hope you love it as much as I do! Please let us know!

Have fun!

We often get rush tickets very cheap. This of course limits you to selection and not knowing what play you will go to. A few months ago a friend and I decided to just try our luck with no plans. We tried the wicked lottery, didn't get that, Book of Mormon was sold out, then we got orchestra seats for Once for $35 each about 30 minutes before show time. For under $50 I have gotten rush tickets to:
How to succeed in business (with Daniel Radcliffe)
Once
Chicago
Avenue Q
Seminar( with Alan Rickman)
La Cage (with Harvey Firestein)
Finians rainbow
Harvey (with Jim Parsons)

If you are visiting for a short time/from a far distance, buy your tickets ahead of time, so you are guaranteed seats.
If you can chance it, rush tickets are available to anyone, first come first served at most (not all) box offices, day of, a few hours before the show. They are usually good seats that haven't sold, but sometimes obstructed view. A few shows only offer "student rush" which requires a college id, but the majority are for anyone.

Enjoy the show! Just the two of them are going, and we watched a PBS show on the show yesterday. I will report back with their thoughts!
