First I have to thank all those who pass along their tips and experiences.
We planned our trip for a long time and the things I picked up here wnet a long way to making it a great trip. We got 5 day PH for the week following Labor Day.
3rd best freebie: Continental breakfast at the Candy Cane Inn. Everyone started off with fruit, muffins, bagels and kept hunger at bay til lunch.
2nd best freebie: free ice water at restaurants. Made it easier to keep our boys (7 & 9) and ourselves off pop until dinner.
By far the best freebie for our boys was being in the wheelhouse of the Mark Twain riverboat. I knew nothing about this until I read about it here. We got on board when there was a small crowd and made our way to the upper deck. From there we saw the captain and asked her if we could come up. She unlocked a door marked "Private" that we would never have dreamed was accessible to us and let each boy blow the steam whistle and ring the bell and then helped them use the wheel to steer around the island. When we returned to dock each boy received a pilots certificate to take home. It made a big impression on them and was definitely a highlight.
