Best computer program for checkbook

Checks? I think I write one every few months. Most of my banking/bill paying is done through my bank's website.

Regardless of whether it was a paper check or through bill pay, you'd still want to reconcile your bank statement, wouldn't you? :confused3

Really all I need is a way to input my checks, assigning it to a category such as utilities, car maintenance, etc. so I can generate reports, and then balance my checkbook.

People still write cheques?

Quicken.

I've got a real problem with doing all my financial tracking via a cloud app.

Money works on Win 7. Just got a new Dell XPS a couple months ago, installed Win 7 (downgraded from Win 8 which I did not want) and it works fine. It won't sync to online accounts, but I never used that functionality anyway.

Also done online.
What do you do when you have a payment out there that hasn't cleared for weeks? Online doesn't tell you exactly what you have in the bank account at any precise moment like physically writing (or typing) it into a checkbook register/computer program in real time.

I can have up to 3 checks not cleared and showing online to the church at any one time.

Walmart can take 5 days to process an electronic payment.

It takes a month for my large quarterly car insurance payment to clear and show up online.

I can't remember for weeks at a time that I need to subtract $834.56 from the online amount after I've paid for the last heating oil fill.

My car payment won't accept a payment for the day I make it. I have to set it up days in advance from when I actually want to pay it and sit for another few days to wait for it to show up online.

I don't have the ability to remember all of these things in order to look online at my bank account, subtract all that hasn't shown up yet, and know what is in there.

I just recently bought a Dell with Windows 8 and Microsoft Money still works fine on it.:thumbsup2

Yes, but like I said, I want a stand alone piece of software that does not need to log onto my bank account.

Yeah, I really like that YNAB does not link to my bank. I understand the price being a deterrent, you might consider attending their free online classes to win a copy :)

I completely agree.
I used to make spending decisions based on my checking account balance online (which often led to errors if I forgot that some of the money was already promised away), and "budgeted by account" keeping savings accounts for various goals -- this is so much easier than that IMHO.
