I'm hoping to get some advice. Our family is going to Disney at the begining of January 2016. One thing we want to try is a Character Dinner. My son will be 3 at the time of the trip. I was thinking/hoping that one of these dinners will be more his speed for meeting some of the characters. There seem to be so many I can't make up my mind. Anyone have some tips?

As far as character meals go, I find the food to alway be just eh. So I would just go to the one with the characters you like the best. Recently I have been enjoying Akershus but that is princess dining and The Garden Grill which is Mickey, Pluto, Chip and Dale. Everyone still goes nuts for Chef Mickey, although the characters are great the food is just okay. I actually tend to enjoy The Tusker House breakfast the most of all the character meals.

Chef Mickeys at Contemporary - food is ok, characters IMO are a bit rushed to go through all the tables; 1900 Park Fare at Grand Floridian has the stepsisters, stepmom and Cinderella and I hear they're quite funny; Garden Grill at Epcot with Chip N Dale - who my daughter just loved. Then you have Mickeys Backyard BBQ which I dont know much about unfortunately.

I would stick to the restaurant that has your child's fav characters. Our must do is Chef Mickey's - the food is ok but we love seeing all their fav characters there.

I agree with previous posts- the food at most of the character meals is buffet so nothing amazing but not terrible either. Pick the restaurant that has the characters you want. We enjoyed Tusker House Breakfast- Donald, Goofy, Daisy, Mickey. We also like Ohana breakfast- it's family style instead of buffet and has Lilo and Stitch with Mickey and Pluto- my kids love Stitch. Crystal Palace has Winnie the Pooh and friends. Another I don't see mentioned is Cape May at the Beach Club- Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto i believe are there in beach wear. My 3 yr old son could care less about Akershus- Princesses but he did enjoy 1900 PF- the step sisters made a big deal over him giving him kisses and saying they were going to marry him. When we left his face was covered in lipstick smooches.

For a little munchkin, I highly recommend Crystal Palace (Pooh and Friends) and Hollywood & Vine (Disney Jr. pals). If he's into Pooh bear, or Jake and the Neverland Pirates, those are lots of fun! :)

Foe a child that little, I would first look at available characters and then pick a meal based on those. My favorites are 1900 Park Fare, Tusker House, and Garden Grill. CP is okay if you prefer the Winnie the Pooh characters.

Of dinners, Garden Grill and Tusker House would be my first choices, but I agree with the idea of choosing the characters you want to meet.

Hollywood & Vine doesn't have characters at dinner. Neither does 'Ohana or Cape May.

1900PF, Chef Mickey's and Crystal Palace are much better at breakfast, IMO.
