I see your point. Do you think f/1.4 and 1600 would have allowed for a shutterspeed that would have made an important difference, and perhaps a better image?

Well... put it this way. Spectromagic is very difficult to shoot well (without a flash), especially if you want to pick up any detail other than just the lights. You need every advantage you can get.

just a thought paul, remember if you shoot in raw you have a lot more leeway to adjust exposure post processing.i just read the exact amount and of course can't remember it now but it's a few exposure stops both way. so even if you aren't right on the money, it can be workable if you are at least in the ball park.

i don't know that the sharpness of a lens will help with motion/lens blur just make a sharper blurry photo( i have plenty of those ) however the l lenses usually have wider apertures as well as sharpness so that would help

however IS would help there as it makes it easier to hand hold at slower shutter speeds...so get one of those fancy smancy 70-200 f2.8 L IS and you'll be set( thinking you must have a canon if you are talking l glass)
