I want to buy some beef jerky and have been disappointed many times by very dry, tough jerky. This is for a gift. Anyone got opinions or thoughts on this? It's been a while for me because I'm avoiding salt.

Okay, the whole purpose of jerky was back in the day you'd dry the meat so it would last longer. It's suppossed to be somewhat dry and tough. :rotfl2:

That being said, while I LOVE jerky (drier/tougher the better), let me recommend something else for you...Landjagers.

This is a German sausage stick that is fantastic. You don't need to refrigerate them and if you hang them up to dry for a couple of days they actually get better!

I highly recommend this brand specifically:

World Kitchens makes very good beef jerky.

Wal-Mart used to sell it, but I can't find it there any longer.

It is available on the internet, just google world kitchens beef jerky

thank you! I'm sending this to Afganistan so I think I need something prepackaged.
I might look for that for my husband though. I should have given you that little tidbit of information, lol!

After watching all the commercials, we finally broke down and bought some Jack Link's jerky.

Compaired to the stuff we have gotten in the past, it was a thicker cut and was not bone dry. I thought for jerky it was still tender.

Go to a local meat market where they make their own. That will be the best.

Dry and Tough= Jerky :rotfl:

I eat Robertson's pretty much exclusivly. (local family and company from Marietta, Oklahoma) http://www.realbeefjerky.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

Try the meat sticks they are more of a smoked/preserved item (like slim jims) I think you'll probably find that more to your texture preferences. There are some really good ones on the internet that are natural and not as chemical/preservative/fat laden as slim jims.....though you can't really beat a slim jim for sheer childhood nostalgia.

Here's Robertsons' version of a slim jim (don't know how 'natural' they are but they sure are tasty)

OMG - I loooooove Robertsons jerky! They aren't local for me, though, so I pay out the nose to have it shipped. Sometimes they run specials - free shipping with 5 pounds of jerky. Yes... I have ordered 5 pounds of Robertsons jerky and used the "excuse" of free shipping to justify it to my hubby. :cloud9:

I have the opposite problem as OP - all the jerky I can find locally is way too tender and soft for me - imo, it isn't jerky unless your dentist gets po'd at you for eating it.

:rotfl:I don't live in Marietta or even real near (over an hour drive to either of the closest locations). Luckily we have a chain of Beef Jerky Emporiums and the one in my town carries Robertsons, plus I'm on the road a few times every year and any trip south on I-35 includes a stop at Robertsons. Oh and I recently discoverd that Love's Country Stores has Robertsons in the little 2-3 piece individual packs, only it's labled under Love's. Woo Hoo!!!!!!
