We’re thinking of going to the beach on our arrival day. We’d be able to go around 7 PM. What are some nice quiet beaches with good parking and safe waves? I’m especially interested in beaches in Newport Beach because one of the temples for our church is there and we’d like to see it.

The area around Orange St in Newport is pretty good. You can park for free in the residential neighborhood there. I don't know how quiet it will be because it's summer, but you should definitely be better off in the evening and on a weekday.

Good thing it’s not this weekend since Schools out for the summer this weekend in Southern Cal

Update my entire family teaches north of San Diego... school year ends next weekend.due to covid . .. so expect holiday traffic, etc...

Newport Beach is great, we always go there when at Disneyland as well as Huntington Beach if we have time. But if you are prepared to go a little further (extra 10 mins), Laguna Beach would be my no 1 pick.

Laguna had had a pretty major problem with homelessness over the last year. In addition, the beach is somewhat regularly closed due to sweage spills, so we never go there. It's a pretty town to walk around and visit, but not the best actual beach in the area by a long shot.

How's the rideshare situation in the area by Newport beach and Anaheim? We would probably just take an uber/lyft to and from the beach.

It's been horrible in my town with the worker shortage... so hard to get one these days even on peak days... and I live in a tourist area so I'm nervous about relying on it.

It's pretty bad here too. I've seen surge pricing up to $200 for a 15 mile trip from Newport.

I would rent a car for a day, honestly.

Well that’s awful to hear about Laguna Beach, sorry to hear it’s gone downhill so badly. I was only there less then 2 years ago. Shaws Cove, Crescent Bay, Picnic Cove etc all affected?
Oh well, hopefully it comes back.

I don't really go there so I can't say what it's like now, but last fall, there were lots of reports of homeless people from other cities being "dumped" in laguna beach. The sewage spill happened in November 2019 and it was the city's fault and they wouldn't take responsibility for it initially. The lawsuit that followed was just settled recently and they were found liable for $1.5 million in fines and have been forced to earmark half of that for infrastructure improvements. That spill closed 16 miles of beaches in OC. The city's lack of concern for their role in that has turned me off to ever going back to those beaches.

Huntington Beach is massive and has a lot of parking so it is not hard to find an open space. Super nice beach that does not get crowded is Crystal Cove. Laguna Beach currently has major traffic issues, I would avoid it.

I like Newport Beach. You can rent bikes, boogie boards, etc.. They have a fun zone down there, and the waves are gentler than the ones at Huntington Beach.
